In June 2006, EMA (Entreprise Métro d’Alger) appointed an international consortium headed by ALSTOM to provide a turnkey system for the first tram line running in the Algerian capital.

As soon as September 2007, EMA confirmed its partnership with ALSTOM by signing a contract for a line extension.

This project is part of the Algerian government’s development program to meet the urgent need to reduce traffic jams in the Algerian capital
The first line will link the centre of town to the eastern districts. It is now planned to run for 23.2 km with 38 stations, with 41 CITADIS trams and will open 30 months after the signature of the initial contract.

Officially it should be in service for the beginning of 2009 (spring)... If no delays!

Btw not only Algiers but Oran and Constantine will get their new tram system as well.

Alstom share of Algerian trams orders totals 326 million euros

PARIS (Thomson Financial) - French engineering group Alstom said its share of previously-announced contracts to supply trams and tramway infrastructure to the cities of Oran and Constantine in Algeria is worth 326 million euros.

Alstom, which announced the signature of the 662 million euro deal in a statement Thursday, had originally said in November 2007 that its share in the order was worth 300 million.

The order was awarded by Algerian public transport company EMA.

The contract for the city of Oran calls for an 18 km line serving 32 stations, with a value of 355 million euros.
Alstom, which won the deal as part of the Tramnour consortium with Spanish group Isolux Corsan, said its share is worth 148 million euros.

The 8 km, 11 station Constantine contract is worth 307 million euros, of which 178 million for Alstom, which won it in partnership with Italian group Pizzarotti.

No it doesn’t, the tram and metro have a deferent directions, but there will be some interchanges in some stations at Alger centre. the tram will go east, the metro will go east then south east toward the airport and south as well

Il n’y aura pas de train à grande vitesse en Algérie à l’horizon 2008 selon la SNTF qui annonce qu’il sera remplacé par un train circulant à 160km/h.

La SNTF vient de lancer de nouveaux appels d’offres pour la construction de lignes ferroviaires sur les mêmes tracés des LGV. La première entre Thenia et Bordj Bou Arréridj (330 km), la deuxième entre Boumedfaâ et Djelfa (250 km) et la troisième entre Touggourt et Hassi Messaoud (150 km). Ce renoncement était prévisible. Après avoir lancé l’appel d’offres et annoncé la liste de six groupements étrangers pré-qualifiés pour la réalisation des LGV, la Société nationale des transports ferroviaires s’est murée dans un silence total.
L’attribution du marché et le lancement de la première ligne LGV en Algérie entre Khemis Miliana et Bordj Bou Arréridj étaient prévus en juillet dernier. Mais la SNTF n’a rien annoncé, ce qui a commencé à inquiéter les soumissionnaires. En visite en Chine, le président Abdelaziz Bouteflika a confirmé le renoncement aux LGV pour des raisons de coûts de réalisation. La décision aurait été prise après la présentation par les soumissionnaires des offres financières pour la réalisation des trois LGV. Ces offres auraient été jugées trop importantes. Les groupes chinois, spécialistes des bas prix, n’étaient dans la course qui concernaient uniquement les groupes européens et américains.
En mars dernier, la SNTF avait annoncé la préqualification de six groupements étrangers : Bechtel (USA), Bouygues (France), Vinci (France), OHL (Espagne), Astaldi et Pizarotti (Italie). « Les LGV sont généralement plus chers de 10% que les lignes pour trains normaux. Le coût prévisible de la LGV entre Khemis Miliana et Bordj Bou Arréridj avoisinait les 3 milliards d’euros, soit la moitié de l’enveloppe totale destinée aux chemins de fer en Algérie. Cette ligne traverse des sites accidentés, ce qui nécessite des tunnels et d’importants terrassements.
En plus sur des milliards d’euros, le taux de 10%, c’est beaucoup », explique un consultant. Pourtant, la réalisation des trois LGV était fichée comme faisant partie des plus importants projets du plan de consolidation de la croissance économique lancé par le président Abdelaziz Bouteflika. Le renoncement au TGV fait grincer des dents les groupes étrangers qui étaient en course. Les trois projets devraient coûter un peu plus de 4 milliards d’euros.
