Nice project. I personally like to use the tram more than the subway because of the view. Also good for tourists new to Algiers...

Le français Keolis va gérer le tramway d’Alger

La société française Keolis a été choisie par l'Entreprise du Métro d'Alger (EMA) pour assurer l’exploitation de la ligne Est du futur tramway d’Alger pour une durée de 10 ans. Montant du contrat : 4,5 milliards de dinars, soit 45 millions d’euros, selon une source de l’EMA. Keolis bénéficiera d’une période de 20 mois pour préparer l’exploitation du tramway, selon les termes du contrat qui sera signé dans les tous prochains jours entre les deux parties.

Filiale de la SNCF, Keolis, avec un chiffre d’affaires annuel de près de 2 milliards d’euros, est le premier opérateur privé de transport public de voyageurs en France. Il est également présent dans sept pays d’Europe et au Québec. Keolis emploie plus de 27 000 personnes, gère 12 000 bus et cars, 39 kms de lignes de tramway, 66 kms de métro automatique et 1600 km de voies ferrées, selon des données officielles de la société. En 2007, Keolis a transporté 1,8 milliards de voyageurs.

Le tramway d’Alger, dont la réalisation a été confiée à un consortium composé du français Alstom, de l’italien Todini et du groupe algérien ETRHB, devrait entrer en service dès l’été 2009, selon les prévisions officielles. La ligne, en cours de réalisation, mesurera 23,2 km et comptera 38 stations.

Alstom a été retenu par l’EMA pour la fourniture de 41 voitures de nouvelle génération Citadis qui circuleront sur la première ligne de tramway reliant le centre-ville aux nouveaux quartiers Est d’Alger. En plus des rames Citadis, Alstom fournira, dans le cadre de ce projet, les voies, le système d'alimentation, l'électrification de traction, le système de signalisation, les équipements de commande, une partie des travaux publics et un atelier.
