I thought for a second it was Lula. Like what is he doing there for the US bid?

The US bid committee should make a promise about US visa policy in the final presentation.

Something could be done to address the issue. However, there would have to be time taken to go through the language and have a proper debate to assuage the political factions to get a deal going. Not easy to do. I don't know if there's time for that before the vote. If FIFA wants to go elsewhere, that's their business. I think that's what will happen, regardless.

It is my duty to report the death of the US 2018 World Cup bid. The US has officially withdrawn..

US pulls bid to host 2018 WCup to focus on 2022

By The Associated Press,

Friday, October 15, 2010 at 9:23 a.m.

ZURICH — The United States pulled out Friday of the bidding race for the 2018 World Cup, switching its focus to winning the hosting rights for 2022.

The decision, which had been expected, came after "months of careful deliberation" between FIFA, UEFA and the U.S. bid team, said FIFA, soccer's world governing body.

U.S. bid chairman Sunil Gulati said in a statement that the move is in its "best interests."

Australia, Japan, Qatar and South Korea are also bidding to stage the 2022 event.

The 2018 World Cup will now be played in Europe , either in England, Russia or the joint bids of Netherlands-Belgium and Spain-Portugal.

With FIFA rules stipulating that successive World Cups cannot be played on the same continent, England responded to the U.S. decision by withdrawing its 2022 bid.

Europe has long been expected to host in 2018 because the 2010 tournament was in South Africa and the 2014 finals are in Brazil.

FIFA will choose both hosts on Dec. 2.

Because, as the US have withdrawn, there are only European candidates left in the 2018 race, so 2018 will be in Europe, and, according to FIFA rules, the same continent can't host twice in a row (or for the one after that), so therefore there is no possible way that England could win 2022.

I'm hinting towards a USA/UK deal.

Let's change this tilte to just "2022".

With the US withdrawl I'm almost sure England will get the bid for 2018.

Well, that clarifies the situation a bit more, I think. So, what happens from here on? All of the remaining candidates will have to go through at least one round. Most likely Japan and Korea would be out in the first round. While I'm not all that keen on Qatar, I would be surprised if they were bumped out in the first round by either Japan/Korea. So Qatar gets through the first round, which would be a tremendous achievement from their standpoint.

After that, I would look to the CAF and AFC members to figure out where the final vote would be like. Conmebol becomes the key vote and I read articles that several members, like Paraguay, lean towards the Australians. For Australia to be in a strong position, though, they would prefer that Qatar and not Japan or Korea get to the next round, along with them. Japan and Korea could pose an interesting challenge for the eastern Pacific rim, despite their previous hosting, as they are all mature economies and don't have the problems of Qatar. If the China threat is as real as rumored, then this would be their best chance in a long, long time to win hosting duties. 2026 could be headed to Eastern Europe, North Africa or Near Asia, anyway. I don't think the USSF would be interested in 2026 in case of a loss, as this would confirm to them that geopolitics clearly disfavor the US hosting future Olympic Games/World Cup for years to come.

And USA will host in 2022, just as I predicted last year. Not too long until I'm proven right!

Hopefully, but something deep down inside me says to be ready for disappointment.

Yup. How many times did we hear about the IOC loving the Chicago bid early in the process?

We have to show that we are committed, and in my opinion we need to do a lot more.
