Boom hope for Leeds city centre shops

By Juliette Bains
Published on Thursday 15 December 2011 08:14

City centre shopkeepers are starting to rub their hands as tills ring out across Leeds.

New figures show sales are already up on last year.

Last week footfall increased by 46 per cent over the past five weeks and is also up 32 per cent up on the same week last year.

Government minister John Hayes experienced it for himself on Tuesday as he left London behind and travelled to Leeds to finish his Christmas shopping.

He took a stroll around the Victoria Quarter and visited jewellers Azendi on King Edward Street and Accent Clothing at the Queens Arcade.

The visit came after TV retail expert Mary Portas published a review exploring how to breathe life back into to our high streets.

He said: “Leeds City centre is exactly the sort of area that we were thinking of when the Prime Minister asked Mary to launch her review.

“Mary’s review has set out a number of recommendations that could make a real difference to areas like Leeds.

“The Government is already looking at what it can do to make these recommendations a reality.”

Mary Portas, who starred in the BBC Two programme Mary Queen of Shops, said: “I don’t want to live in a Britain that doesn’t care about community.

“I believe our high streets are a really important part of pulling people together in a way that a supermarket or shopping mall, however convenient, however entertaining and however slick, just never can.

“Our high streets can be lively, dynamic, exciting and social places that give a sense of belonging and trust to a community.”

The review makes recommendations on changes needed from the Government, local authorities and businesses to help high streets thrive.

It suggests that small businesses and independent retailers need more support and communities should be given a greater say in what they want to see on their high street.

The report is published alongside new government-commissioned research, Understanding High Street Performance, which shows that although some high streets continue to thrive, a third are degenerating or failing and by 2014 less than 40 per cent of retail spending will be on the high street.

The Government is expected to respond to the recommendations in the spring.

Rumours that Abercrombie and Fitch could be opening a store in Manchester.

EDIT: Ooops sorry looks like the "rumour" was untrue. Knew it was too good to be true

Aye, I went to the one in London and it was just an overhyped Hollister.

That's not what the public think though, and if the Cheshire & Lancashire folk got wind of an A&F store opening in Manchester they would flock here in their thousands!

Harvey Nichols confirms Liverpool One deal

9 Jan 2012.

The privately owned department store group has chosen the 1.6m sq ft shopping district for one of its new format shops.

Harvey Nichols will occupy the two-storey 22,000 sq ft former Habitat unit at the end of Peter's Lane. The store is rumoured to be using the group's new Beauty Bazaar concept aimed at tapping into one of the more resilient areas of its rerange during the downturn. Further details will be released in spring 2012, Harvey Nichols said in a statement. The store will open in autumn 2012.

Miles Dunnett, head of asset management for the Grosvenor Liverpool Fund, said: "There is no better testament to the success of Liverpool One, and indeed Liverpool, than Harvey Nichols' decision to choose it for this new-format store.

"This is the crowning glory of a very successful year for Liverpool One. Footfall for 2011 was up by more than 5% compared to 2010, and sales have increased by over 10% for the year. According to a report by independent research firm, Javelin, more people than ever before from across the North West are visiting Liverpool One as their first choice shopping destination, increasing the total catchment by 27% on the previous year."

Joseph Wan, chief executive of Harvey Nichols, said: "Liverpool One is the number one shopping destination at the heart of this great city. Liverpool One serves a large catchment area, with a loyal and discerning customer, and there is no better place from which to launch this exciting new concept."

Harvey Nichols had a pop-up Harvey Nichols Foodmarket in Liverpool One from September to January.

Cushman & Wakefield and Tushingham Moore are letting agents for Liverpool One.

Grosvenor signs Kooples in Liverpool One

9 Jan 2012, 10:48

French fashion retailer, The Kooples, has signed a lease on a 1,875 sq ft store in Peter's Lane, due to open before Easter.

The Kooples joins Hobbs, Jaeger, Reiss, Ted Baker, Radley and Whistles in Peter's Lane.

A spokesman for The Kooples said: "We have a strong following in the region, via our website and department store concessions, but it is vital for our growth to establish boutiques in key locations. Liverpool One's catchment has a love of fashion and style that is absolutely perfect for The Kooples, and the elegance of Peter's Lane is a great complement to our own unique style."

Chris Bliss, estate director at Liverpool One added: "We're pleased to be able to confirm that The Kooples will be opening its second store in the North West at Liverpool One. The Kooples is a fantastic addition to Liverpool ONE's premium fashion line-up, and is completely in line with our approach of bringing new and exciting brands to the region."

Meanwhile, Grosvenor said sales at Liverpool One rose by 10% in 2011 compared to 2010, and footfall over the same period increased by more than 5%.

Cushman & Wakefield and Tushingham Moore are letting agents for Grosvenor. Cushman & Wakefield advised The Kooples.

Without doubt Leeds boasts the finest shopping centre in the UK with VQ looking stunning in these pics, and unlike any other in grandure and sheer opulence. Could be Paris, Milan or Rome.

I have never seen any arcades as opulent as those in Leeds in Paris, Milan or Rome.

In other words, people must stop making these comparisons as if we're aspiring to that standard when it's Paris, Milan and Rome that in this respect, are below us. It should be people in those cities saying 'it could be Leeds'.

That sounds a tad silly No.1.. I can't imagine the people of Paris saying 'we aspire to be Leeds, the great provincial city in England'
