Kali Mandir, Rajnagar, Madhubani, Bihar
Copyright bittoo@picasaweb

This temple is one among many famous temples built by the Raja of Darbhanga. It stands in the Rajnagar palace compound. The palace itself is in ruins, however. Madhubani is the heart of Mithilanchal. It is the birth place of Kālidāsa, one of the greatest Sanskrit poets and Vidyapati, the greatest poet of the Maithili language.

Kanak Vrindavan Bagh, Jaipur, Rajasthan
Copyright skiddalgi@flickr

The Kanak valley in Jaipur is one of the most beautiful gardens of Jaipur. It was built under the orders of Maharaja Sawai Jai Singh, belonging to the Kacchawa family, the rulers of Amber for many generations. The chief attractions of the garden are the series of marble fountains, and the temples. The temples of Natawarji and Govindji, are fine examples of the Rajasthani temple architecture. The Govind Deoji temple, after facing years’ of neglect, has received significant restoration. The temple is adorned by beautiful chattris, or carved roofs, and intricate lattice work. The mirror work in the temple is similar to that seen in the famous palaces of Jaipur. The central chamber of the temple is decorated by the wonderful ‘Panni’ work. Parikrama, a fountain made up of a single piece of marble, is located in the central chamber of the temple.

Kiradu Temples, Barmer, Rajasthan
Copyright Boudhi Tree@flickr

Kiradu was originally known as Kiraktoop. It was ruled by the Parmar clan of Rajputs between the 11th and 13th centuries. In the early period they had been feudal subordinates of the Chalukya of Gujarat and hence the latter's influence is seen in the temples.

Temple Complex, Chaini Village, Himachal Pradesh

Chaini is one of the oldest villages in the state. It is famous for its tradition of stone and woodwork. The Chaini Kothi is believed to be over 700 years old. At 45 meters, it is one of the tallest structures in the entire hill region. It has lost its upper two stories in the earthquake of 1905. The tower was used as both a temple and a watch-tower.
