I agree. Fortunately the cladding is decent at least, but just a boring box. Boxes should be banned

It's partly due to the English translation, they could have also used "building" or "tower", but they chose this, probably with little understanding of the actual meaning.

And, the design isn't spectacular, but it's not as bad as you say, it's just one of many anonymous towers going up in Shanghai, and this will blend right in.

It's not spectacular in any sense, but it is still a quality design by Gensler. The skyline needs "fillers" as well, and not only edgy designs.
