At SSP, in reference to the fact that Minnesota games are really boring, I mentioned that I believe that "Minnesota does not actually have a hockey team. What you see when you watch Minnesota play is a simulation of a hockey game based on 30-year averages, and the players are holograms".

Yet, they're still better than Toronto.

But since I'm nice I'll give everyone cookies. They're a special recipe with pistachio, anchovies, and jalapeño. And deep fried. You dip them in béchamel for lubricant when you eat them. Because they're burnt.

Well obviously any simulation based on 30 year averages is going to be better than a team that's consistently below average. Nothing terrible shocking there lol!

Btw, thanks for the disgusting cookies! But keep practicing. I'm sure your cooking will improve.

Why not shake up a childhood favourite and replace chocolate chips with... capers?!

The fumes from the Bombardier plant may have something to do with it. Especially since they started to gear up production for the streetcars & Toronto Rocket trains.

Cheers, m

hahah I grew up with a rail line behind my house - 16 years of GO trains and CP trains ... it certainly affected my development.

Interestingly enough, 15 years later Im still living near that same rail line though in a different city.

yes, fair enough.

I thought to mention that there was a small rail yard near my house ... but I think Vid needs this one (jk)

Cheers to you and your rail yard, Vid

Toronto Life article:

R.I.P.: Elwy Yost, TVO’s Beloved Cinephile, Dies at 85

In the era before Netflix—and even before Suspect or Queen Video—one of the best ways to watch foreign or classic films (from “the Long Tail,” which used to be known as the back catalogue) was courtesy of Elwy Yost, the host of Saturday Night at the Movies. It was sad news for many people that he passed away yesterday at the age of 85. We liked Torontoist’s memorial and they provided this concrete example of his legacy. Check out the full tribute after the jump.

Quote:
TVO used its tiny budget for Saturday Night at the Movies as resourcefully as any television show has ever spent money in the history of television, amassing a huge collection of movie rights so that Elwy always had a new film to present and discuss: a massive trove of treasures from Hollywood’s golden age, foreign films from every country imaginable, indie and renegade films and the occasional big-budget blockbuster. But, because this was TVO and therefore an educational channel, simply showing the movie wasn’t enough: Yost and his team also did countless interviews with actors, directors, writers, editors and anybody else they felt could serve to teach the public about the craft and art of movie-making.

Today, that archive spans thousands of hours. It is widely considered to be priceless and one of the great treasures of film criticism.

http://torontoist.com/2011/07/elwy_yost_1925-2011.php

Yost’s career nicely illustrates why there was such a high demand for Netflix when it started: he spoon-fed us quality cinema, and we wanted more (and we wanted it now, not next week). It is for the same reason that small indie video stores are doing all right while Blockbuster crumbles, and that is why someone like Yost is/was irreplaceable: people with his level of knowledge and passion about films are few and far between.

The only time I didn't watch Saturday Night at the Movies was the rare occasions when Montreal played the Leafs on Hockey Night in Toronto. Elwy was a great host, and interviewer, and certainly sparked my love for old movies. It might have been very different if I had grown up in an area that got more than 2 TV channels

Torontoist article:

Keeping Track of Total Recall and Other Toronto Film Shoots

The set of Total Recall on Lake Shore Boulevard yesterday. Photo by jsaneb from the Torontoist Flickr Pool

By Meg Campbell on July 27, 2011 1:15 PM

...It's not exactly a rare occurrence for Toronto residents to come across productions using their streets for filming. Lake Shore Boulevard was closed between Parliament and Jarvis yesterday and the day before while the cast and crew of Total Recall took it over with their cameras and a car on a lift.

But not every shoot makes the news. Luckily, the City keeps a pretty up-to-date record of productions currently filming in Toronto:
