Folks, the hotel is staying. Local opposition as well as other grassroots initiatives will have this tied up in courts for years & remember, there's a midterm election coming up. New york has lost too many irreplaceable & unique features just so someone can make a buck. Put it downtown, or in times square, it won't get built otherwise. This is new york city we're talking about, the people here are well represented in government and they have strong voices of their own. Pretty stupid to tear down a historic 1700 room hotel across the street from a national transportation hub & sporting/event arena in the heart of midtown (10 blocks from times sq too) just to build a faceless glass tower that also ruins the skyline.

Construction won't start for a few years. So the hotel is staying for now. And here's a fun fact this is getting built in midtown, ESB down the block.

Demolition of the hotel will start in 2011. There are no grounds for a viable lawsuit.

That's why NY and London are the only Western cities building several new office towers at the moment.
i would just add toronto to the list, the city has several 200m+ projects on the way (U/C and Prep).

i'm all for new construction and can't wait till the hotel is gone. having seen it with my own eyes a couple of times, all i can say is: tear it down!

Is Toronto building new offices or just apartments and hotels?

It's all condos and a couple hotels. Commercial office has been overbuilt for the last 20 years and anything new is usually a single tennant high rise, not a skyscraper. The coming glut of overpriced condos there will likely crash that market in the next 2-5 years.

I have to say that Toronto is kicking every other Western Hemisphere's city's a** in terms of highrise construction. And it's getting close to Asia status in that regard.

Anyway, 15 Penn has all the clearances for the demo and if activists want to delay that occurrence with their nuissance lawsuits, then they are actually guaranteeing the tower's success by pushing its completion date further up the economic recovery calendar!

Having pimped Toronto, I don't even begin to get the skepticism about this project from New Yorkers. For instance, that other buildings are nearly empty has ZERO to do with this building's prospects.

not to go OT, but do you have any idea how many highrises are going up in NY which are simply not covered on SSC? even SSP or WNY can't cover them all because it's impossible. it's the same situation with HK. so many 300ft - 650ft tall buildings going up that i lost track a long time ago. believe me, NY is surely ahead of toronto in terms of highrise construction, we just don't see the projects listed here.

i'm telling you there will be lawsuits, i mean those NIMBYs will use every resource available to stall the project. but i'm more than prepared for this phase, cause i know that this tower will get built eventually .

Why would you bring up the situation in Toronto, anyway? What has it to do with the developments in NY?

Not at this height. NYC has some fantastic contemporary, 'glassy' towers, but the skyline still looks a little old compared to many booming cities. This tower, along with the rest of the western manhattan developments and the WTC will add a much needed modern flare on the skyline.

Good point. I guess for NYC, they are in need of more glassy modern buildings to balance out the old buildings. I'm just really sick of seeing all blue or green glass towers because I live near Vancouver and that's literally all they're building now.

you don't have much to say when you come to these threads do you. Building the building is easier said then done. But I'm sure next time you visit this thread, it will be finish.
