Why does the Hotel Pennsylvania need to pass away for this project?

The Hotel Pennsylvania that stands today is a glorified unkept roach motel. Its historic relevence exists because of a song and if that is the only reason then I'm not particularly sold on keeping it. One way or another this sucker is coming down because unless I'm incorrect the Landmarks preservation commitee doesn't even feel its worth preserving. Keep the base like Hearst and get rid of that god awful hotel for something better.

I agree with those who will shed no tears for the old Hotel Pennsylvania. I actually lived in the old place for about a week and a half ... because my employer wanted me to do training in NYC - he is a notorious cheapskate and the Hotel Pennsylvania was probably the cheapest room he could find in Manhattan that had a private bath. The place was just old, worn, tired, and the rooms were ridiculously small. I will say the staff was friendly and the rooms (my room at least) was very clean with new mattress, linens, TV ... so I would not characterize it as a "roach motel."

It's only claim to fame was the jazz piece "Pennsylvania 6-5000" by ... ? ... Glenn Miller? Artie Shaw? Can't remember ...

Architectually it is blah - McKim, Mead, & White notwithstanding. It's a 90 year old tired lady on life support .... time to pull the plug.

I'm not crazy about the replacement. It looks too bloated - chubby!

This building will not see the light of day. The American economy is in shambles, the stock markets are abysmal, and the real estate market is in a recession.

Not out of the question. The way I see it, I think they'll stay at the WFC for a little longer then go for their own new hq. Just as the WTC is completed, another new batch of supertalls will start to go up. It's going to be a constant flow from now till the 20's. This is going to be one of those projects where a lot of fighting will happen, delaying progress, because of the building there.

Yea, let's freeze NYC and stop all future development. We wouldn't want to change anything.

Such backwards thinking.

Super tall buildings in Midtown will only enhance the Empire State Building by offering even more outstanding views!

I'm sure that such an iconic building will lose attention just because they build another tall building close by... Why so serious?
