Sorry, I'm not feeling this one...it looks imported from Hong Kong. Not something New York would whip up.

NYC whips up all kinds of design, this being one of them.

I agree with you, better an imported one than none at all

I'd say we have enough of garbage. supertall or not. We need something with quality and distinction. The proposed tower has none of it.

I agree with you. Quality over quantity.

It does look an awful lot like the ICC in Hong Kong, particularly at the top, though this seems to me more weighty, in an ungraceful way....I'll second the design-over-height position. Stuff like One57, Tower Verre, and the Hudson Yards (or was it Brookfields?) proposal interest me much more.

Nice skyscraper, though i find it dissapointing that New York continues to destroy alot of its nice historic buildings for highrises. Pitty! I am all for high-rises, but it seems it does not matter what old building is there it gots to go.

There is no conceivable way that a building site with 2.5m sf as of right, which can be emptied at will (since a hotel occupies the site) won't be developed. Anyone who suggests anything to the contrary knows nothing about development in NYC.

Robert is spot on, and here are three reasons why:

A) 28 Million SF of commercial space is zoned for the Hudson Yards district in addition to 15 Penn and Moynihan Station. This will be the next office cluster in Manhattan.

B) 18 Million SF of large leases expire over the next 5 years.

C) The great majority of Midtown Manhattan office stock is over 35 years old and tenants are looking to shift to newer, better designed space when current leases expire.

Even with Manhattan West and Hudson Yards adding close to 12 Million SF of office space in the next 8 years or so, there will be plenty of demand for projects like 15 Penn even if we don't see any economic miracle.

This tower along with the other Hudson Yards proposals distort the skyline! The building itself, although somewhat voluptuous, possesses good design. However, in this location, I would decrease the height.

Ahem, tower heights tend to be determined by the market and achievable FAR. If they said the same thing back in the 1920s and 1930s, there would have never been an ESB or Chrysler.

That's a good one.
It is just so that new towers be placed at unfavourable places for others. Sometimes the architect fits the design of the tower in the surrounding, but often not. You can't do anything about that.

Nice point. That must be why a lot of people do not like this building to be built 2 blocks from the ESB.

People keep mentioning how sad it is that they're tearing down the Hotel Penn. Ummmm, have you been inside or around the damn thing? The outside is deteriorating and the inside is a nasty tourist trap. It's built for the masses, and really, there is a building right down the street that looks exactly like this building! And even the building right across the street looks exactly like it.

And personally, as far as the ESB goes, I think it's amazing when older buildings have similar height neighbors! Look at the Beekman and the Woolworth! OR the new building at Madison square park and the Metropolitan Life Insurance building. I think the Empire State Building deserves a brother! And it'd be a little like the Twin towers when viewing from the east or west!
