Hudson Yards is being built, so there's no reason to say 'if'

Moreover, Pelli replicated his favorite design from the 1980s at Canary Wharf and Batter Park City too.

Hotel penn should be landmarked and renovated, and this tower should be built on one of the decrepit blocks on 6th south of Greeley Square. I'm sure the air rights can be transferred.

It is tall, but not very tall. After all ESB was built in 1931 with almost the same height. So to claim today that this is some sort of a new achievement is just wrong.

well no, it's not an achievement, but it's still very tall
here's a comparison to other "tall" and recognizable buildings around the area, excluding the west side proposals to give you an idea of the scale.

The empire state building built in 1931 with the same height shows how magnificent and revolutionary it is to still compete with modern buildings. It doesn't show however that it's small!

Thank you but I am very well aware of its height. My point is that I see nothing so superior, new, interesting, height that makes it sooooo desirable. Granted, Hotel Penn is not in a best shape, but given the rapid rise of prices on real estate properties and apartments it may be turned into luxury apartments. With all the development to the west of the site on Hudson Yards and around this area residential prices will go nowhere but up.

There are 3 decrepit blocks on 6th ave between 31st st and 28th st where this can be built instead of the hotel penn site. Hotel penn is a gem that needs to be restored. These blocks I mentioned are mostly run down old buildings of no historical significance, and surface parking lots. These blocks need to be redeveloped, and the air rights can be transferred 1 block away. Any thoughts?

I agree I don't know why not do it anywhere else! Maybe even further I'm all for adding to the skyline but it has to be in the right place. I don't think right next to the empire state that it will be very beautiful as it could be diagonally to to it.

Well my blocks for this project are even closer to the empire state building. I am talking about the blocks between 6th ave and broadway south of Greeley Square

As I recall, the Hotel Penn site had extra air rights that permitted an enormous tower, and the City approved Vornado's transfer of other air rights to this site.

This site now has around 2.5m sf in air rights, as of right. Few sites in Midtown (excluding the HY) can claim that.

In addition, unlike other full-block sites in Midtown which have lots of little buildings with scores of tenants, this has one building, a hotel which can be emptied at will immediately.

Great building! An excellent addition to the skyline.

Now I only hope the Chicago Spire to be built, so then USA will build many supertalls again.

The Chicago spire is never coming back. And I'll be very surprise if it does.

Unfortunately that is true. The Chicago Spire is completely dead

Is confirmed that's its cancelled. I'm glad I didn't fallow skyscrapers to heavily back then, or I would've been COMPLETLEY depressed!! I think it would've been beautiful fr Chicago and the foundation wrk would have got my hopes up. I think it's going to be a while before America build like it used to. There's not so much need for it anymore and companies are still very cautious do to September 11th but I'm optimistic for the future!!

nope, but it will be several years before anything begins . Vornado will wait until they think they can get tenants.

In the quote you quoted, I think he was talking about the Spire.

Vornado is the developer here, so the Spire is cancelled, this building is just waiting for the economy to rebound a bit. It has to charge higher rents than the WTC or Hudson Yards, so this could be 5-8 years but it'll be built eventually.
