It was only a matter of time. I'm sure this will begin in time for Moynihan Station.

The loss of the Drake still kind of stings. The proximity to ESB isn't ideal, either. I like the tower's design in that rendering, but I just think this would be much better suited among the Hudson Yards cluster. We'll just have to see if Roth decides to complete the Hotel's renovation or not. At least if the Penn goes something impressive will take its place, I suppose.

Not exactly an optimistic timeline.

Good news!!! Glad to see this coming back online! Here's adding another supertall to NYC. This will be one big tower with 3 msf.

Don't we have a thread for this tower already? Might be better to merge them for continuity sake.

Reading the article it does appear Vornado has really been approached aggressively by several companies. I think the fast buildup of the office towers in Hudson Yards really has speeded up the timeline so instead of a massive renovation to hold through the next ten years or so they may well think full speed ahead on the tower project instead. I think the design has to be more iconic and inspirational than the last one but from what I gathered the Vornado people, while definitely open to the possibility of going the full renovation for the hotel route, REALLY want this opportunity to build a massive business tower to be something they take full advantage of rather than wait and get left scrambling against more aggressive developers. It's a prime location, a transition area to the soon to be booming West Side so why not take advantage if companies are really serious about this?

There was no way Vornado wasn't going to come back to this tower when the time was ripe. Looks like that time may be now!

I thought at least the design was dead, but seeing the same huge tower still in planning is great news.

I heard way before that 15 Penn Plaza would block views of the ESB from the west. What happened with that issue?

I think what is happening with that is that Manhattan West and Hudson Yards are already going to kill the view from the west. This tower if it gets build will be on 33rd st. directly inline with 30HY and one of the 2 main Manhattan west towers.

For those who complain that this building could block views from the ESB- The ESB is an iconic building, but at some point we have to move on from it and start building more supertalls.

Here's a picture of New York City in the future. As you can see, the Empire State Building has been blocked pretty thoroughly.

I'm kind of happy because this is just another reason for madison square garden to be moved and penn station to be given another life. But I really wish that developers in New York City would really start to build mixed use towers.

The design of that hotel has always left much wanting, and it's not in good shape at all and needs massive rennovation to bring up to standard. If the new design for the office tower can be aesthetic and iconic, then it's time for the hotel to go into the sunset.

I wish they could use Pelli's signature Hudson Yards Tower for this site instead.

The humorist Dave Barry has a GREAT column on the Hotel Shpennsylvania:

Quote:
The Hotel Shpennsylvania was apparently built around the time that North America became a separate continent. I am told that, at one time, it was quite elegant. Of course, I am also told that, at one time, Elizabeth Taylor was a virgin.
Our first whiff of the Hotel Shpennsylvania experience came when we entered the lobby, which is furnished in a functional yet practical style, consisting of: a floor.

Someone over on SSP invoked the Gimbels (long defunct department store) passageway, so I will too:

The remains of the Gimbels Passageway bring long-time New Yorkers back to a more dangerous era. (NY Post/Chad Rachman)

The secondavenuesgas.com (the SAS blogger is too young to have experienced the Gimbels passageway 1st hand) link below quotes from the NYPost article that provided the photo above AND invokes a seemingly accurate depiction of the times:
