Legislative Assembly Complex across the Sarawak River to the Kuching Waterfront.

KUCHING: The proposed pedestrian bridge linking the State Legislative Assembly (DUN) complex to the Kuching Waterfront across the Sarawak River will enhance Kuching as a prime tourist destination, says the Managing Director of Plaza Merdeka Holdings Sdn Bhd, Steve Ng.

He said the bridge, designed by a renowned Malaysian architect, Hijas Kasturi, who also designed the new DUN complex, would allow visitors to savour the real beauty of the city. It would also link the city’s major historical sites, including the proposed Plaza Merdeka, which would be completed in 2012.

“I understand that the project (bridge) is still at the proposal stage,” he told the media yesterday.

On another matter, Ng dismissed the claims of State Assemblyman for Padungan Dominique Ng that there was no progress on the Plaza Merdeka project.

“The project is ahead of schedule with 130 bore piles completed to date. The ground conditions are good and we have not encountered any major problems. The workers are working late into the night, and we are confident of meeting the scheduled opening date in March 2012,” he said.

Plaza Merdeka, he added, had appointed an internationally acclaimed construction company, Binapuri Construction Bhd (the same company which had built the DUN Complex) as the project main contractor.

“We are confident that with their endorsement and strong organisation, we will complete the project in March 2012. We will continue to work hard to ensure a trouble-free construction process,” said Ng.

Besides the shopping complex, Plaza Merdeka will also have a five-star hotel with three-star prices, which would be operational by the third quarter of 2012.
Pedestrian bridge across Sarawak River
By RINTOS MAIL Tuesday March 9, 2010

A pedestrian bridge will be built across the Sarawak River to link the Kuching Waterfront with the new State Legislative Assembly building in Petra Jaya.

Works on the bridge has yet to begin but it is said that the underlying concept of the bridge is the harmony of Kuching North City Hall (DBKU) and Kuching South City Council (MBKS), which complement each other. The project is expected to cost between RM10mil and RM20mil.

To be supported by suspension cables, the 4.95m wide pedestrian bridge is expected to be 225m long.

Based on an artist’s impression, the bridge is built with an ‘S’ shape curve across the Sarawak River to reach the maximum height of 8m above the water level so as to allow sufficient clearance for vehicles.

Two capsules, one to house a restaurant and another a souvenir shop, will also be built on the bridge.

Chief Minister Tan Sri Abdul Taib Mahmud told reporters after the launch of the Kuching Esplanade recently that the proposed bridge project would be carried out.

However, he did not reveal the cost of the project and when it would be implemented.

Alor Setar Tower
Located in the heart of Alor Setar, this tower, standing at 165.5 metres tall is a prominent and modern landmark that signifies the rapid development in the state of Kedah. It functions as both a telecommunications tower and a tourist attraction. The Tower's platform allows visitors to enjoy a breathtaking view, that stretches from Gunung Jerai (formerly known as Kedah Peak) to the Strait of Malacca. From the tower, you will see vast expanses of paddy fields which lies outside of Alor Setar - an amazing view especially during harvest time. It's the second tallest tower in Malaysia.

Alor Setar Tower To Spot New Look Next Year
August 30, 2010 22:35 PM
http://www.bernama.com.my/bernama/v5....php?id=525167

ALOR SETAR, Aug 30 (Bernama) -- The Alor Setar tower will spot a new look by early next year when upgrading works at a cost of RM4.5 million are completed by December.

According to Menara Kuala Lumpur Sdn Bhd Chief Executive Officer Zuraidah Mohd Said, renovation works which started in June, are expected to be completed within six months.

She said with its new look, the Menara Alor Setar would be able to organise many more activities of international standard to attract more tourists to the state and the tower.

"Among programmes to be organised beginning next year include extreme sports, cycling events, recreational runs and activities involving domestic and foreign participants," she said after breaking fast with the media here Monday.

She said there was a need to bring in more visitors to the tower in order to achieve a 10 per cent increase from the current 1.9 million visitors.
