Siemens: More trains needed to attract commuters to rail

BANGKOK POST Published: 9/11/2009 at 12:00 AM

More commuter trains should be added to the government's massive budget for expanding mass transit rail networks in Bangkok to encourage more commuters to switch to trains, says the electrical engineering giant Siemens AG.

Passengers walk past a train at the Makkasan station during recent test runs of the Airport Link system.

As well, the government should look into the extending the 28-kilometre Airport Rail Link connecting Suvarnabhumi Airport with the Phaya Thai and Makkasan areas in downtown Bangkok, said Ralph Hasselbacher, senior vice-president of Siemens' Thai unit and head of its mobility division.

"The Airport Rail Link could be extended east and west to more suburban areas to carry more people in and out of Bangkok," he said.

"Many people live outside Bangkok and need to commute to work in the capital. Instead of using the buses and getting stuck in the traffic, the commuter rail system should be developed at the same time with the city lines."

Siemens has teamed up in a consortium with SET-listed Sino-Thai Engineering and Construction Plc to develop the long-delayed Airport Link, for which commercial operation has been postponed to April next year.

The contractors have finished all construction work and three months of trial runs are needed before regular service can begin.

The German company also supplied all of the electric trains and provided mechanical and engineering services for the BTS Skytrain and the MRTA subway.

Mr Hasselbacher said development of city lines should be accelerated, beyond the Red Lines linking Bang Sue to Rangsit and Taling Chan.

He said Siemens would participate in bidding for all mass-transit rail projects planned by the government, especially the Purple, Blue and Green lines which are extensions of the existing subway and BTS systems.

To date, winners of the first three out of six contracts for the Purple Line have been announced but only one contract has been signed with the SET-listed construction company Ch. Karnchang Plc (CK).

Siemens will bid for the fourth and fifth contracts for power supply, communication and ticketing systems for the Purple Line. Tenders are expected to be called later next year, he said.

At the same time, Siemens has proposed to the government a plan to build a train assembly plant in Thailand. The company has started talking to potential local partners to jointly develop the project, which would require a critical mass of more than 100 train carriages to make it a viable business.

The Blue and Purple lines will require about 75 carriages each which would make local train assembly facility feasible.

Also, the company has begun looking for possibilities to source train parts and components from local suppliers if possible. "We will source parts locally as much as we can," he said, adding that wheels, signalling and braking systems, and other high-technology components would be imported as there is no local producers existed.[/QUOTE]
