Airport Rail Link set to be in service mid-2010

BANGKOK, Dec 4 (TNA) – The 28-kilometre Airport Rail Link connecting Suvarnabhumi Airport with the city centre will be fully operational within the next six months, mid-2010, at the latest, Prime Minister Abhisit Vejjajiva said on Friday.

Speaking after presiding over a special test run of the Airport Rail Link with members of his cabinet, Mr Abhisit said his transport minister Sophon Zarum has given assurances that the Airport Rail Link's commercial service could be in operation as early as March or mid-2010 at latest.

The premier and his Cabinet also witnessed a test of the baggage check-in system at Makkasan Station in downtown Bangkok as well as ticketing from an automatic ticket-selling machine before boarding an Express Service train to Suvarnabhumi Airport.

Mr Abhisit said the development of the Suvarnabhumi Airport Rail Link and City Air Terminal Project (SARL) is in line with the government’s policy to develop the city’s communication and transportation system so as to link Bangkok’s main areas to Suvarnabhumi Airport.

He said that SARL will also develop the railway system, which helps ease heavily congested traffic in the capital and adjacent areas and raise the people’s quality of life.

After the special run was completed, many commuters asked for more tickets for free rides. State Railway of Thailand (SRT) announced that free tickets for other test runs will be available on Saturday through Tuesday (December 5-7).

The 28-km rail link connects Suvarnabhumi Airport in adjacent Samut Prakan province and the City Air Terminal (CAT) in Bangkok’s Makkasan area, where passengers will be able to check in their baggage.

Both services of the Express Service and the City Line will be operated on the same tracks at speeds of up to 160km per hour. The Express Service is a 15-minute non-stop journey between the CAT and the airport with a fare at Bt150 per trip.

At Makkasan Station, 28 check-in counters will be in service, with four counters reserved for large baggage. The baggage transfer system will be capable of taking up to 300 pieces per hour.

City Line commuter trips, with fares at Bt15-45, will take 30 minutes to reach the airport, departing from Phaya Thai, Ratchaprarop, Makkasan, Asoke, Ramkhamhaeng, Hua Mak, Ban Thap Chang, and Lat Krabang stations, and will end at the last stop of Suvarnabhumi.

SRT expects to serve up to 50,000 commuters daily. According to State Railway of Thailand (SRT), Yutthana Thapcharoen, the airport link’s full-scale commercial operations are expected in April next year if independent engineers can certify all rail equipment within three months. If not, full service may be postponed to August. The SRT is now seeking a subsidiary company for train operations’ management during the first phase of service. (TNA)

Suvarnabhumi Airport Rail Link and City Air Terminal

The wait is finally over for the new Suvarnabhumi Airport Rail Link and City Air Terminal project. The Airport Rail Link project, providing direct rail service to and from Suvarnabhumi Airport, is scheduled to open on the auspicious occasion of His Majesty the King 82nd Birthday Anniversary 5th December 2009 and full service in early 2010. The Airport Rail Link is owned and will be operated by State Railway of Thailand (SRT), through a subsidiary company, which will administer the overall operations. The 25.9-billion-baht rapid transit system covered a distance of 28km at a maximum speed of 160km / hour aims to provide an alternative mode of public transportation to reduce the traffic congestion and air pollution in the city and also to boost the tourism and MICE sector.

A briefing conducted by SRT management

There is a total of 8 stations in the Project’s alightment from Phya Thai (interchange with BTS Sukhumvit Line) to Suvarnabhumi Station. The intermediate stations on the line include Ratchaprarop, Makkasan, Ramkhamhaeng, Hua Mak, Ban Thap Chang and Lat Krabang and the rideship is estimated to be 14000 - 50 000 passengers/day/direction. There are altogether 9 Siemens Desiro trainsets in service. Passengers who wish to travel to Suvarnabhumi Airport have two options of rail service, namely:

SA Express Train (Suvarnbhumi Airport Rail)

SA Express (Non-stop)

This is a rapid non-stop transit rail system linking between City Air Terminal ( Makkasan Station) and Suvarnabhumi Airport. Passengers can board and also check in their luggage at any of the 24 airline check-in counters (Total 34 check-in counters to meet future demand) located in the 3rd level (Departure Hall) of the City Air Terminal and arrive at Suvarnabhumi Airport only within 15 mins.

Airline check-in counters at Makkasan Station

Each train carries 4 carriages - 3 passengers carriages (170 comfortable seats) and 1 carriage reserved for baggage complemented by a tasteful interior design with many modern elements. The train carriages have a 2-2 seat set-up in both forward- and reverse-facing configurations. Standing is not allowed.

The trains will be out on the lines from 5 am to 1am, a 20-hour period and train frequency at 15 minute intervals

Tentative Fare: 160 Bath per one-way trip (Yet to be confirmed)

Comfortable seats and storage space for personal baggage

SA City Line Train

The City Line Train is operating (24 hrs) as commuters train running from Phya Thai Station to Suvarnabhumi Station (Terminal Station) within 30 mins. The total service line cover a distance of 28km. The City Line service will provide a total of 5 trains on the revenue service line, each of which comprises 3 passenger wagons carrying altogether 745 passengers per trip. The city line’s frequency will be every 15 minutes during peak hours and then every half an hour off peak.

Tentative Fare: 15 - 45 Baht

The Suvarnabhumi Station will have both an exit tunnel connecting to the airport and Novetel Airport hotel

A glimpse of Bangkok’s city life

Bangkok’s Suvarnabhumi Airport can handle 45 million passengers each year, the high-speed train services between Suvarnabhumi and Bangkok city centre will save you considerable time and money, taking you to the city within approximately 15 mins as compared to a distance of 25km by road. A metred taxi trip from the airport usually costs around 350 - 400 THB (inclusive taxi surcharge and toll fee) to hotels in the Pratunam area. The new Airport Rail Link system is well connected through the existing transportation network and facilities which can give you a peace of mind to arrive in time for meetings and conventions and this will definitely bring Thailand a step closer to become a globally recognized and preferred MICE destination in Asia.
