Cabinet approves B111bn for Pink, Yellow lines
29 Mar 2016 at 17:46 WRITER: REUTERS

Two new mass transit lines, the Pink and Yellow, will extend Bangkok’s current mass-transit rail system to Nonthaburi and Samut Prakan.

The cabinet on Tuesday approved a 111-billion-baht project to build two new rail lines in Bangkok, part of a wider infrastructure push by the government as it seeks to boost a sluggish economy.

Transport Minister Arkhom Termpittayapaisith said the cabinet approved construction of a Pink Line and a Yellow Line.

"We'll now look at the bidding process to ensure it takes place within the next three months," Mr Arkhom told Reuters.

The rail lines are part of the government's infrastructure drive, aimed at kick-starting Southeast Asia's second-largest economy.

The Bank of Thailand on March 23 cut its 2016 growth forecast to 3.1%, as the economy was losing steam and still faces global risks.

The government has said the rail links are needed to reduce traffic congestion in Bangkok, which currently has three skytrain lines and one underground line.

The 34.5-kilometre Pink Line will run from Bangkok to Nonthaburi province. The 30.4-kilometre Yellow Line will run from Bangkok to Samut Prakan province.

Their construction will be funded on a public-private partnership basis.

Thai cabinet approves $3.14 bln Bangkok rail projects
BANGKOK, MARCH 29
Thailand's cabinet on Tuesday approved a 111 billion baht ($3.14 billion) project to build two new rail lines in the Thai capital, part of a wider infrastructure push by the ruling junta as it seeks to boost a sluggish economy.

Thai Transport Minister Arkhom Termpittayapaisith said the Cabinet approved construction of a Pink Line and a Yellow Line.

"We'll now look at the bidding process to ensure it takes place within the next three months," Arkhom told Reuters.

The rail lines are part of the military government's infrastructure drive, aimed at kick-starting Southeast Asia's second-largest economy.

Thailand's central bank on March 23 cut its 2016 growth forecast to 3.1 percent, as the economy was losing steam and still faces global risks.

The government has said the rail links are needed to reduce traffic congestion in Bangkok, which currently has three Skytrain lines and one underground line.

The 34.5 kilometre (21.4 mile) Pink Line will run from Bangkok to Nonthaburi province in the north. The 30.4 kilometre (18.9 mile) Yellow Line will run from Bangkok to Samut Prakan province in the east.

Their construction will be funded on a public-private partnership (PPP) basis. ($1 = 35.3500 baht) (Reporting by Pracha Hariraksapitak and Kitiphong Thaicharoen; Writing by Pairat Temphairojana; Editing by Amy Sawitta Lefevre and Simon Cameron-Moore)

9 people you're bound to meet on every BTS ride
It's one wild ride. Illustrations by Panita Thiraphapong

By Bonnie Sananvatananont | Apr 07, 2016

Butt Man

There’s a special place in hell for this person. You know the one we’re talking about: he leans his entire body, butt-first, onto the pole and has a perfectly enjoyable BTS ride to the other side of town. Meanwhile, the rest of us are forced to divide into two groups: those attempting to claw onto any tiny bit of pole left available, and those forced to live life on the edge and stand hands-free for the rest of the journey, haunted by the sight of his parted butt cheeks.

PDA Backpackers

While us locals are trying desperately to avoid being pushed closer and closer to the sweaty stranger with bad breath next to us, these two backpackers are far too happy to be plastered onto each other. They don’t even need to worry about being able to reach a pole because they’ve got each other to hold onto. They’re so busy making out that they remain totally oblivious to the evil glares from the judgemental auntie next to them.

The Human in Quarantine

The BTS is a germ-filled, disease-ridden tube full of sicklings, and anyone who dares step into it unprotected is a fool. Well, according to this lady anyway, who walks in fully prepared each day with a face mask, protective shawl and finely tuned skill of avoiding human contact at all costs. Sneeze in her face. We dare you.

The Amused Tourist

In case you can’t already tell that it’s this guy’s first time in Thailand based off his elephant pants and worryingly bad sunburn, there’s also the fact that he feels the need to repeat every station name to his friend and laugh at how strange it sounds. Yes, we know Mo Chit and On Nut are really hilarious sounding syllables. You’re the first one to ever make that joke. Look, everyone on the train is in hysterics, too.

Those-Jeans-Are-Too-Tight Guy

We don’t know where this person is going, or who they’re meeting, or if this is some sort of fancy-dress costume, but dear god, he should not be wearing those pants. We don’t even want to begin to think about the sweaty legs (and other things) beneath those skin-tight jeans. Please, please, please don’t drop that Rabbit card.

The One With Loud Music

Being able to listen to someone else’s music without them realizing is like secretly having X-Ray vision: you get to look deep into their soul and find out things they’d rather keep private. In this city, that’s too often a fondness for The 1975 with the occasional bit of Tattoo Colour in between.

The Line-Cutting Auntie

This mean old lady is everywhere—at the ticket machine, the ticket gates and on the platform. She’s small yet savage; a woman/beast who you probably won’t notice till she steps on your toe to push through for the last spot on the train, leaving you stranded on the platform in utter shock, anger and pain.

The Guy Who’s Definitely Getting off at Nana

He’s overweight, wearing a Chang T-shirt, cargo shorts (and maybe even a fanny pack in extreme cases), and you can tell from his face how ready he is for night out at the plaza. Eww.

The Self-Appointed #BTScuteboy

He's the one taking up two seats to himself for some serious selfie action—just in case the people over at BTS Cute Guys don't spot him themselves.

Orange Line wins cabinet approval
20 Apr 2016 at 04:00 WRITER: AMORNRAT MAHITTHIROOK

The cabinet on Tuesday approved construction of the 82-billion-baht Orange Line electric train route linking the Thailand Cultural Centre to Min Buri district in eastern Bangkok.

Bidding is expected to be completed in June.

Speaking after the cabinet meeting, Transport Minister Arkhom Termpittayapaisith said the cabinet has given the Mass Rapid Transit Authority of Thailand (MRTA) the go-ahead to build the proposed 21.2-kilometre Orange Line at a cost of 82.9 billion baht.

Of this amount, some 76.63 billion baht is set aside for construction costs while 2.78 billion baht is earmarked for consulting fees for the project and about 3.48 billion baht is reserved for contingency costs, Mr Arkhom said.

He said the cabinet has instructed the MRTA to call for bids to find contractors by June so construction can begin this year.

The Orange Line was originally to run from Taling Chan, west of the Chao Phraya, but Cabinet has retained only the second from the Thailand Cultural Centre to Min Buri district in the far east of Bangkok.

The MRTA has lowered the construction cost by about 2.57 billion baht from an earlier estimate of 85.48 billion baht after it agreed to use more domestically produced materials and equipment in the construction.

About 94% of materials and equipment will be locally sourced while the rest will be imported such as elevators, Mr Arkhom said. He added that on Dec 8 last year, the cabinet approved a budget of 9.62 billion baht for land expropriation. This brings the total cost of the project to 92.53 billion baht, he said.

The 21.2-kilometre Orange Line will feature a 12.2-km subway with 10 stations and a 9-km elevated railway with seven stations.

The Orange Line is one of several transport infrastructure projects currently under way in the capital being pushed by the government to ease heavy traffic as well as to stimulate economic growth.

The MRTA will also consider ways to further lower project costs as the project budget approved by the cabinet is only a general framework, Mr Arkhom said.

The minister added that the cabinet also instructed the Finance Ministry to seek loans to finance the project, and for the Budget Bureau to ensure the MRTA has sufficient annual funding to operate the rail construction project.

BMA Gold line 2.7 km will now be fast tracked and bidding will happen while the line is still under Environmental Impact Assessment (EIA). The line will be given to the cabinet for approval this month. Construction of the first phase 1.8 km is expected to begin later this year and the line will be operational late 2017.
