Norway a big highland with a low population. Not too bad compared to the population:

So damn true, but so does the swedish, finnish and danish. With Norways extremely low population density, no motorway from Oslo to Kirkenes i needed. Plus the big problem with the mountains, making a trip from Oslo to Bergen long, slow and filled with tunnels.

I would say motorways length/population number is better criteria.

Current expansion plans here in Portugal:

Portuguese roads are not classified as Autoroute and others ... they are classified as (by order of importance):

IP (itinerario principal , main route)
IC (itinerario complementar , secondary route)
EN (estrada nacional , national road)
ER (estrada regional, regional road)
EM (estrada municipal , municipal road)

The network looks like this nowadays:

Someone made this:

red = under construction/enlargement to 2x2 or planned
blue = 2x2 (or more) auto estrada in service

I wish to make professional charts and draw paths that can be found on the right road map, however I managed to find a program that is sufficiently practical and easy to draw. I tried using CorelDraw, but it works with layers, and seems kind of complicated.

In regards to the UK motorway/freeway network. I agree it could be alot more extensive. Most people though forget that the UK is now a devolved state, meaning that Scotland and Wales (plus Northern Ireland) do there own stuff in terms of network.

Scotland has very little population in the top half so no motorways/freeways are needed
Wales has its population mostly in the south as central and north wales are sparsely populated.

England on its own though, does have a good network and most of it is 3 or 4 lanes both sides. Also there extensive expressways, A1, A2, A3, A10, A12, A14, A19, A30, A34, A38, A40, A42, A50, A66 and A69. Which all provide "near" motorway/freeway/autobahn standard.

I would agree that I can think of 4 motorways are desperately needed in England (and were dropped years ago)...

the M67 between Manchester and Sheffield
the M64 between stoke and derby
upgrading the A14 to a motorway as 2 lanes are crazy.
finish off the upgrading of the A1 to A1(M) between London and Newcastle to take much needed pressure off the M1.

Hope this helps!!!

Interesting, no completed motorways towards Slovakia, none towards Romania either but THREE complete motorways towards Ex-Yugoslav countries.

This is the most up-to-date report on Canada's highways. It was prepared by the Council of Ministers Responsible for Transportation and Highway Safety (COMT). The COMT is a gathering of all provincial transport ministers.

English: http://www.comt.ca/english/nhs-report-2009.pdf
French: http://www.comt.ca/french/nhs-report-2009f.pdf

It contains maps and details of all highways in Canada. There is one national map, but if you go through the full document there are detailed maps and charts for each province and territory.

An excellent document, if I do say so myself.
