Lithuanian Government approves Hadid-designed Hermitage-Guggenheim Museum project in Vilnius

Just two months after the Hermitage and Guggenheim Museum’s announced that Zaha Hadid had won an international competition to develop a design for a new museum in Vilnius, Lithuania, the Lithuanian government announced Wednesday that it has approved the project’s construction. According to preliminary estimates, the museum will cost $117 million of which the Lithuanian government is to pay 10 to 15 percent of the total.

According to Prime Minister Gediminas Kirkilas the idea of this museum in Vilnius is highly important. "This project will present Lithuania’s image as that of a modern dynamic country," he said.

The building, which will be situated near the White Bridge, is expected to complete in 2013, the year when Lithuania will preside over the EU. It is anticipated that the project will open with a Kandinsky exhibition with works contributed jointly by the Hermitage and the Guggenheim Museums.

I love this project also. Investment in culture is always good. And investment in culture with architecture like this is awesome

This photo is more than 1 year old (too lazy to search for a newer one). Still some more are proposed. One more.

If you want to know more about highrises (new projects) in NordBalt region feel free to visit this thread. It contains links to all of them including city name, so also the projects of Vilnius will be in a reach of 1 click.

Amazing project! No doubt! It´s a very futuristic building!

But let me make a question about this: What was the place, in which the Guggenheim is going to be built, dedicated to?

I make this question because Bilbao´s Guggenheim was built also close to the river Nervión and was a project to revitalise the river banks that are located all along Bilbao, in the very center. Ships that came from the Atlantic came into the city and unloaded in the river banks when the industrial sector was powerful in Bilbao. But after the industrial decadence in the 80´s, a strong project was proposed with the Guggenheim as main attraction. The result, you can see it in modern Bilbao..

Is Vilnius´ project made with the same objective? What is the history of Vilnius´ river banks?
