I love Zaha Hadid's work.

If she could do New Street i'd be very happy but if she can do anything in Birmingham would be very very happy.

Yes, Dudley Zoo is a strange place with a number of Art Deco buildings, including those empty kiosks dotted around and the notorious bear pit of a similar design (shown below). I haven't been for about 10 years but I think it hasn't changed all that much.

And yet, according to the TV documentary I watched, it is one of the finest examples of art deco design and construction anywhere in the world.

The Deep - The World's only Submarium. One of the largest aquariums in Europe. Home to 40 sharks and over 3,500 fish, it is the most successful millennium project in the country.
http://www.thedeep.co.uk/

The Museums Quarter - Large area of Old Town close to the River Hull with converted old buildings and newer additions.

Incorporates:

Wilberforce House -
the birthplace and residence of William Wilberforce, who campaigned against the slave trade in the 19th century.

Streetlife Museum -
tells the story of 200 years of transport in Hull.

Arctic Corsair -
real trawlermen share their experiences on board the 1960s sidewinder trawler permanently berthed on the River Hull.

Hull and East Riding Museum -
tells the amazing story of the area from the beginning of geological time, through the early tribes all the way up to the 17th century. Also includes fine Roman Mosaics and the Hasholme Boat (an Iron-Age Logboat)

Also, elsewhere in the City Centre:

Hull Maritime Museum -
discover Hull’s rich maritime history, the story of whaling and deep-sea fishing in the frozen Arctic seas.

Ferens Art Gallery -
one of the finest provincial art galleries in the country. The Ferens has an extensive and internationally renowned permanent collection.

image hosted on flickr

Spurn Lightship -
for an insight into the life of the Humber estuary.
The Guildhall Collection - houses a high quality public collection that includes fine art, sculpture, furniture, the Civic Insignia and silver.

Hands on History Museum -
Housed in the former Hull Grammar School building built 1583. The ground floor houses Victorian Britain - a themed hands-on interactive exhibition which examines aspects of Victorian Britain. The first floor is home to The Story of Hull and its People - local social history displays, and Ancient Egypt - life and death, including tomb furniture and the mummy of an ancient Egyptian priest.

image hosted on flickr

Beverley Gate -
Last remaining part of the city's medieval wall. It was at this gate at the top of Whitefriargate that King Charles I was denied entry into the city by John Hotham and various city elders. One of the defining and major political preambles to the English Civil War.

Holy Trinity Church -
Largest Parish Church (by area) in the UK, and a cathedral sized beauty. Includes some of the finest and oldest medieval brickwork in Europe.

-----
speaking of Zoo's

They (bristol zoo gardens) are meant to be opening up a 136 acre safari park just off the M5 sometime by 2012.

The following animals are highly likely to be included: manatees
dear god, i know it's a slim chance of getting any of those animals listed, but I for the love of god hope they have those.
------------------
also what exactly is a submarium? an underwater aquarium? [/endobvious]

I went to The Deep when it first opened. It's good, but I think it manages to be the worlds only submarium because submarium is kinda a made up word... marketing strategy for The Deep. There's only one part where you go under the tank, although there is a lift in the tank too. It is basically a huge aquarium...

For Newcastle and the Tyneside conurbation we have quiet a lot really:

Art Galleries:
The Biscuit Factory (where you can actually buy the art)- just outside city centre
Laing Art Gallery (fixed classical collections)-city centre
Shipley Art Gallery (fixed and changing collections- Gateshead
Hatton Gallery- city centre
Side Gallery (photgraphy gallery)
Waygood Gallery- currenty in £40m redevelopment- city centre
Baltic- changing modern art in former grain wharehouse on city centre quayside

Museums:
Great North Museum (former Hancock)- natural history, greek and egyptian collections in mulit million redevlopements reopens 2009- city centre
Discovery Museum- history of tyneside - city centre
Life- in Int. Center for Life- genetics museum- city centre
Segedunum- roman fort where the wall ends- in Wallsend (!!!)- world hertitage site
Arebeia Roman Fort- says it all really- South Sheilds
South Shields Museum - South Shields
Stephenson Railway Museum- North Shields
Tynemouth Blue Aquarium- Tynemouth
National Centre for Childrens Books- city centre

Theatres & Music venues:
7 theatres (Royal, Live, Northern Stage, Tyne in city centre and 3 others dotted around Tyneside)
Sage- home of the Northern Symphonia,
Metro Radio Arena- 10,000 seated arena
Carling Academy
City Hall

There is also:
Newcastle Castle Keep (great views from the top!)
Hadrians Wall (remains in the west of the city centre- better remains west of the conurbation though- world hertitage site
Newcastle Gateshead Quayside including award winning millenium bridge (which now titlts at midday every day for tourists), Norman Fosters Sage and of course 7 other bridges spanning the Tyne
Grainger Town- victorian architecture including Grey Street which was voted Britains best Street by Radio 4 listeners
Tynemouth priory
Catholic and Anglican cathedrals in the city centre
Angel of the North (UK's largest statue) welcomes people to Tyneside as you drive up the A1.

Metro Centre (now again Europes largest shopping centre after its expansion)

St James's Stadium Tours (you can all marvel at the empty trophy cabinets!!!!)
Newcastle Gosforth Park race course
Saltwell Park (awarded Britains best park 2005)
Four Blue Flag Beaches on Tyneside- Whitley Bay, Cullercoats, Tynemouth and South Shields. Tynemouth has a large surfing community, you can even book lessons to learn how to surf. National surfing competition has been held there for numerous years.

Finally I guess one huge toursit attraction is the nightlife up here, The Rough Guide To Britain recently voted a night out in NewcastleGateshead as the number one British attraction.

That is it, I personally think it makes a canny good weekend away, but then again I am biased!

I forgot to mention events going on in Sheffield as I think this is really somewhere Sheffield excels. We seem to have an almost constant flow of major festivals on, plus lots of smaller ones.

Have a check on www.eventsheffield.com to see what's going on. There's 58 'events' just this Saturday and Sunday!

That sea life center is expensive! Ive not been in so dont know if its worth it? I thought there was a national one in plymouth as well or has it been surplanted? I love aquariums, went to the one in Brighton as well which was alright, would be great to have one in one of the small docks next to the bay.
