Tunisian Aviation Thread

This thread will deal about all what relates to aviation in Tunisia: airlines, airports, etc...

In 2008, Tunisia has 30 active and 2 planned/under construction airports. 7 of these 30 airports are international ones .

The 7 major airports of Tunisia

1/ Tunis-Carthage International Airport in Tunis
2/ Habib Bourguiba International Airport in Monastir
3/ Jerba-Zarzis International Airport in Djerba
4/ Sfax-Thyna International Airport in Sfax
5/ Tabarka-7 Novembre International Airport in Tabarka
6/ Tozeur-Nefta International Airport in Tozeur
7/ Gafsa-Ksar International Airport in Gafsa

The 2 planned/under construction airports

1/ Enfidha-Zine El Abidine Ben Ali International Airport in Enfidha
2/ Gabs-Matmata Airport in Gabs

All the airports in Tunisia fall under the authority of the Office of Civil Aviation and Airports (OCAA or OACA in french).



In Tunisia, there are several airlines that provide services ranging from scheduled domestic and international flights to charter ones. There are also services as specific as business aviation, medical evacuations, etc...

In 2008, there are 5 active airline companies and 1 planned airline.

1/ Tunisair (scheduled international flights)
2/ Sevenair (scheduled domestic and international short-distance flights - owned by Tunisair)
3/ Nouvelair (charter international flights)
4/ Karthago Airlines (charter international flights)
5/ Tunisavia (manages flights for oil and gas companies stuff)

Tunis-Carthage International Airport

Number of runways: 2

1/ Surface: asphalt - Lengh: 3200m
2/ Surface: asphalt - Lengh: 2840m

Capacity: 6 million passengers (2007).

The airport is named after the historic city of Carthage (capital city of the Carthaginian Empire), which is located just north of the airport. When the airport first entered active service, it was called Tunis-El Aouina airport.
In 1920, the airport was served by seaplanes of the Compagnie Aronavale which used to land on the lake of Tunis that lays just before it.
Between 1938 and 1951, the airport capacity increased from 10 220 to 104 000.
Expantion works took place in 1997, which brought the airport surface to 57 448 m.
In 2004, the airport capacity reached 4.4 million passengers, and was further increased to 6 million passengers in 2007.
In the last quarter of 2006, the new terminal, called Terminal 2, entered active service. It is used for charter flights and has a capacity of 500 000 passengers per year.

Habib Bourguiba International Airport

Number of runways: 1

Surface: asphalt - Lengh: 2950m

Capacity: 4.3 million passengers (2007).

Named after Tunisa's first president, Habib Bourguiba, this airport serves the city of Monastir and the whole region of The Sahel. Located 8 km west of the city, it entered active service in 1968 and has an area of 28 000 m.

Jerba-Zarzis International Airport

Number of runways: 1

Surface: asphalt - Lengh: 3100m

Capacity: 4 million passengers (2007).

This airport is named after Tunisia's biggest island Jerba and a neighbouring city called Zarzis. It is located 9 km west of the city of Houmt Souk, the capital city of Jerba, and is meant to serve the whole south east region of Tunisia. It entered active service in 1970 and has its name changed from Jerba-Melita International Airport to Jerba-Zarzis International Airport in order to imporve touristic attraction of Zarzis. The airport has an area of 73 000 m, and in 2007, got a new terminal of 57000 m.

Sfax-Thyna International Airport

Number of runways: 1

Capacity: 0.7 million passengers (2006).

This airport is named after Sfax, Tunisia's second biggest city, and the municipality of Thyna in which the airport is located. It lays 6 km south east the city of Sfax and is meant to serve it and its governorate. It entered active service in 1980 and saw many extensions of its area in 1988, 1989 and 1996. This airport had an area of 2 000 m and is also used as a military base. In 2007, a new extension was made with the building of a new terminal of 8000 m and a capacity of 500 000 passengers per year.

Tabarka-7 Novembre International Airport

Number of runways: 1

Surface: asphalt - Lengh: 2870m

Capacity: 0.25 million passengers (2007).

Tabarka-7 Novembre International Airport is named after the city of Tabarka in which it is located and the date of accession into power of the current tunisian president Zine El Abidine Ben Ali. This airport serves the city of tabarka and the whole north west region of Tunisia. Located 15 km east of the city, it entered active service in 1992 and has an area of 5 400 m.

Tozeur-Nefta International Airport

Number of runways: 1

Surface: asphalt - Lengh: 3225m

Capacity: 0.4 million passengers (2007).

This airport is named after the cities of Tozeur (where the airport is located) and Nefta (close to Tozeur). It serves the south west region of Tunisia and lays 4 km north west fo the city of Tozeur. It entered active service in 1980 and has an area of 6 500 m.
