WOW. Sorry, I never frequent the Orlando forums. I wasn't trying to make it an "us vs. Orlando observation. Seems to me; however, with the reaction to what I said, that people in Orlando do in fact have some sort of need to defend their town, even when innocent observations are leveled.

Exactly!!! You always seem to say what I'm trying to say but in the right words.

For the record I've been on the London Eye. The views are great and it's a instant icon that can you see through a good chunk of the central city, but the dynamics there seem completely different to me.

c'mon, man. innocent observations? maybe you should re-read your post. just keep it real.

Talking about research universities off of Fowler and shopping in SoBe and a PAC built in 1987 in a Great Wheel thread to prove some point elaborated on from Webster's definition of scheme or gimmick, to show that it is in fact a gimmick b/c Orlando lacks culture is just... I don't even know the word for it.

but aside from that, peace.

This forum is hilarious. People read waaaay too much into things and take things waaay too seriously. Firstly, who's to say I'm ignorant on what topic? No one here knows me, and you don't know my background. I can see where it might be assumed that I was trying to say that Orlando lacks culture, but that was not intended. Don't be so quick to attack. On topic IMO, it is a ferris wheel by definition, no matter how large it is: a large stationary wheel driven by power in order to rotate carriages which remain horizontal around the perimeter.

First off, Kevinkagy, what kind of fool would debate height in an Orlando vs Miami topic anyway when the issue is not debatable, so why even bring it up in the first place?

Secondly, chuc98, what's with the Tampa vs. Orlando BS ala UCF vs USF?
1. What does USF have to do with the Great Wheel project?
2. What does Tampa's PAC have to do with Great Wheel project? OPAC will be at least as large or larger than Pelli's Miami PAC. I'm pretty sure Miami's new PAC is larger than Tampa's, so why even bring that up?
3. Shopping: South Beach? more like all of Miami-Dade County plus Broward. Ever even been there? Where's Tampa in your comparison? Miami metro's retail tops most cities in the US in sheer bulk. Orlando is not far behind Miami metro.
4. Culture: "Culture." Ah yes, the war cry of lesser traveled cities claiming to have this edge versus the more traveled city, which is perhaps the ONLY thing they can try to claim an edge in. It's a fallacy. Do Tampans feel that threatened of Orlando that they have to play the "culture" card... yet again?

It's no secret that most non-Orlandoans IN FLORIDA ONLY don't care for O-town.

Great Wheel Corp is about to dump $200M in this project and they are not affiliated with Universal, Disney or Busch. Nauseating, isn't it. Just like Hilton with their Waldorf, Marriott with their Ritz, and Gaylord et al before them. The point is that "Orlando" is a product that these and other companies see value to invest in. Just look at Brandweek's latest poll for 2008... Orlando is the highest rated U.S. City on that list. Vegas is a hundred spots below us.

So much hatin' over an observatory. Yes, Pres of 2036 it is an observatory. If you've ever been inside the Eye, you'd know what we were talking about. People who visit these boards who've been on the Eye like myself and read stuff like "ferris wheel" know how ignorant that sounds. Everyone else doesn't.
I was actually gonna do the Eye this year when I head over there, but the economy, well you see where I'm going.

not to dwell on this issue, but I just wanted to clarify a couple of things:

I wasn't referring to you with the def. of ferris wheel comment...

but regarding the "reading into" bit... c'mon now... you're talking about "culture and higher education" in Tampa while comparing USF to UCF and how much better it is w/re to research... and that Orlando lacks in certain areas "where other Florida cities shine"... what's there to read into?

let's keep it real...

As for the Great Wheel, you can say that ultimately it's just a ferris wheel. But consider this: ferris wheel vs. the Eye; Cessna vs. a 747; local Amscot location vs. Sears Tower; the Moon vs. the Earth. there's a little bit of difference there.

He may not be eloquent except for his point that people from Orlando on these boards seem hyper sensitive. I think he was just trying to point out Orlando's general mediocrity in scope to worldy places and even to places within the state. It's a fair opinion, but not one for this thread. Besides, building a ferris wheel on steroids doesn't help with the image problem.

See the thing is, you just added fuel to the fire here with that comment. Obviously it has been pointed out all over this thread how Orlando is anything but mediocre. I mean, c'mon it is one of the most visited cities in the world, not to mention the most visited in the state. So maybe just the people of the world have it wrong and you are right, Orlando's nothing special.

its a very strange place to put the wheel because on non-convention days that area is almost totally devoid of people, i would have put it downtown but then i ain't no expert on these things

48 million didn't visit orlando last year because of its mediocrity like it or not orlando is a world brand and easily in the top 5 US cities that non-americans want to visit or do visit annually

Last I checked, there was no image problem with Orlando.

They are coming to see the mouse that is from anaheim but owns some property in osceola. That is the world brand. Disney is first class that is for sure. I'm not saying that Orlando isn't nice. I am stating what most people that aren't sniffing pixie dust can understand, that it is not world class in it's urbanty. It likes to dress up all nice for the prom but it is really just a bland and uninspiring kind of a place. It is a void filled mostly with the worst elements of american society. Marketing meeting fiberglass copies of reality.

From a business standpoint, it would be difficult to find a better spot in the whole country for a great wheel than I-Drive IMO.

I don't want to go on and on again, but really if you've ever actually been around Orlando, you'd see that we have all the elements of american society here...we've got hip booming suburbs like winter park and maitland, mcmansions over in windermere, apartments complexes near theme parks, a whole college city within a city, urban car-free living downtown, slums and ghettos just on the other side of I-4, and farm life just outside the county in clermont and tavares.

You have every corporation imaginable on I-Drive and 192, and then virtually no corporations at all downtown--just urban mom-n-pop restaurants and shops. i live in an apartment building with about 200 other people from all over the world. i do believe that my roommate and i are the only americans on our floor. everyone else are med students, law students, people getting their residencies all from other parts of the world coming to orlando because they can live the american dream in a place that's not crazy expensive and offers them everything. almost no one here drives their cars if they can help it, and black, white, european, asian, and latino we all hang out at the pool together and get along in a way that in many southern cities and in many other cities in the world it still would not happen.

so pan orlando all you want, but when you live here you see it for what it truly is.

All big cities have those things in proportions that make orlando seem tiny. How does that make orlando less mediocre?

what a cluster fuck this thread has become. Stop feeding the trolls people. To someone who's done a GOOD amount of travel in the past 5 years (thanks to the military), I can say I'm excited to be moving back to orlando. When you compare it to a typical american city, it truely is unique. It's still young and coming into it's own, but great potential is there. Let's leave it at that.

Here are a few comparable-sized cities I've lived in that did not offer that:

Tampa
Jacksonville
West Palm Beach
St. Petersburg

By the way, here are more pictures of "the ferris wheel" like the on we're getting:

Doesn't look so "gimmicky" to me...

Not to keep this thread going, but the only one on that list that does not offer that is jax. And the wheel looks very gimicky.
