Does anyone know if that vast, ugly tract of land south of Pointe Orlando is getting any nibbles at all ?

Land that is South of Pointe Orlando is the Peabody garage. You mean North of there?

Welp, construction is Slated for Fall 2012. They recently had a meeting with visuals and proposals. Check the OrlandoBusinessJournal website for that story.
Not only that, they (Business in the area) were opposing some signs of some sort from the project. SO the land has not been touched and likely will not be for a few months, but there is some progress if that counts Dale.

Wait, you mean I-Drive Live is being built on that vast, vacant tract ? I thought it was going in where the Mercado is.

I Drive Live is the Mercado site and the Wyndam site (for future expansion with shops). Empty parcels North and Southeast (behind Peabody) have no current proposals.

I've always envisioned the W for one of these parcels - I believe there was a proposal years back that never materialized.

it says that they plan to anchor the retail with a SuperTarget. Did anyone else know about the Target?

if this is true, then the Wyndham property is probably going to lose several more of its 2-story buildings then previously anticipated in favor of a fairly tall replacement hotel tower (b/c Targets take up a lot of space).

I think Target is trying to compete with the Turkey Lake Wal-Mart. It makes sense. Hopefully, the Target will be like the one at SODO, with a garage on top of it.

Guys, this is never going to happen. Look at the track record of these people. They have proposed 5 great wheels internationally, including this one. All have either been scraped or supposedly "delayed". If they can't get one going in Dubai, what in the blue hell makes anyone think it's going to happen here?

This project is key to understanding how Orange County will approach neon and large scale signage from here on. I'm hoping that they realize I-Drive can benefit from some iconic larger scale interactive signage but I doubt they will. A few good murals and some cool large screens would be great to make I-Drive more active and exciting.

well, the Dubai example is a very good one. but we don't know the dynamics of the Dubai deal; we just assume there's some big money sheik backing it with oil money and if you can't get it done there, then it can't be done...

I'd definitely agree with you except for the fact that they've signed leases with several major tenants already, and I was with an agent at discussions with yet another prospective tenant last month and saw what they were planning firsthand. it could all just be smoke and mirrors, but I don't think so.

remember, it is two major developments on I-Drive they are doing; I-Drive Live and I-Shops, both within two blocks of one another. The I-shops proposal makes perfect real estate sense and I've been preaching the logic of doing something like that for years. The I-Drive Live project is, well, going into the former Mercado tract which was the center of I-Drive entertainment for decades before Pointe Orlando was built. But that whole portion of the strip is always busy with tourists... hotels, restaurants, attractions, foot traffic. its a good gamble.

It looks like they came to a concession on the signage; and according to the article, they'll begin construction immediately.
