I hate to cause trouble but I've found this image of the old aquatics centre - and you have to agree that it would have looked stunning

That was the MAKE design during the bidding competition. It would never have been built like that because we now know the competition was flawed in the first place.

too big for the site. would have been scaled down to something similar to the current aquatic centre.

Indeed. In fact it would have had to completely change the orientation as on this MAKE Design the pools rain east/west, not north/south as they are on the Hadid design.
![]() The original bid competition did not factor in such later-designed elements such as the Olympic Loop Road to the east of the venue and the rebuilding of the canal walls to the west which reduced the width of the site considerably, as well the re-siting of the land bridge between Stratford City and the Olympic stadium slightly further to the south, as well as the needed addition of an emergency evacuation site next to the venue in case of evacuation. All these factors, as well as reducing the size of the roof due to cost, contributed to the Hadid design being scaled down into the final plan for the site which is being built.

Looks like roof construction is very imminent. There's a big new crane on the webcam, and lots of stacks of parts.

Summer Olympic games tend to be quite an outdoorsy event.

It's part of the landscaping, they're digging down around the centre so in effect it looks like it is raised on a podium level.

Never seen the original design before, it's stunning and would have made a fantastic venue at least equaling the Water Cube. It could even have been nick named the water goggles, as that's what the building looks like. Oh well, we'll have to make do with what we've got.....
