the same pictures here - better resolution and quality. The Library construction works goes very fast, if we compare with Z-Towers and Da Vinci.

I had expressed my doubts about the design of this project previously and now more then ever I stick to it. It would have been a great monument to architecture in the 70's. I, however, can't understand why they kept their hands on the current design up till these days which was made a while ago. Not that it looks really bad but, to my humble understanding, it is a missed opportunity for Riga to have something truly spectacular and contemporary as a monument to Latvia's cultural identity, idependence and society which could have included an international world-class design competition. My two cents, anyway. Apologies if that may sound a little too strict.

My first time to check this thread, and I got to say, I really find it to be an ugly project, and I don't understand why it's being built like that.

It is original and looks great. What's with all the hate against this building? Ok, for today it maybe looks a bit outdated to be included on the lists of the best modern architecure ezamples. So on? Haven't heard any other argument against it.

Well that was just my opinion, it might be original but just saying I don't like it, I find it to be ugly, but it's just my opinion, I don't represent the whole public.

actually such design was chosen because it represents an ice mountain (if I remember correctly), which was descripted in famous latvian writer's poetry!

Yes, that means it does reflect "Latvia's cultural identity". Although it was glass mountain (stikla kalns), not ice. I confused them once too.

well, even if I completely understand the messages encoded in architecture of the building, as well as the supposed meaning of the building itself, I do not find the building attractive and I fully share the views of those who think it's rather ugly. And for those who stick to "Latvia's cultural identity" - Latvia is too diverse to state that "stikla kalns" is the best idea to implement in architecture. To my mind, "Dainu skapis" would be more appropriate, or even the idea of "atmoda" would fit more to the main idea.

Hehe, fun idea about "Dainu skapis"! I imagine one really commieblockish building!!

Kā, piemēram, šī (un varētu būt dažādās haotiskās vietās izvietoti vairāk balkonu - kā simbols pusatvērtām skapja atvilknēm

I think this building is quite original - haven't seen anything like it. And I hope they will build the "Rīgas Akustiskā Koncerzāle" in the future (if ever?) cause they will look great together with the library. Black and white; old Riga on the one side of the Daugava and modern on the other... But it is just my opinion...
