Does anybody know anything about the new airport planned for Dubai? It's supposed to be the biggest on Earth, located in the west of the city...

@ citything

First of, note that everything I'm about to post are the things I know as facts as of latest knowledge. This means that any changes to the masterplan as opposed to this post's facts are purely a result of future revisions.

Dubai's second international Airport will be called the Dubai World Central International Airport. It'll form part of an even larger project known simply as the Dubai World Central. Nearly half of the entire project is the airport itself.

Runways
The airport is planned to have six runways [when fully built-out] each of which has its own taxi-way and four-and-a-half kilometers long.

Terminals
There will be 16 cargo terminals capable of handling 12 million tons of cargo annually.

Parking
The entire complex or aerotropolis will, eventually, have 100,000 slots of parking space.

Gigantic, ain't it. If this isn't...what is?!

That looks like a MEGA Atlanta-Hartsfield (ATL). Isn't this going to be called JXB? I wonder why they'll still need the old airport when this one is completed. I guess only time will tell.

Htats soo STUPID!!

making ALL THE RUNWAYS FACE in the SAME direction?!?!

HOW the HELL will they NAME them LOOOOOL!!?!?!

like...

i mean you cant have anymore that, for example,

36R, 36C, 36L

what will the other 3 be?!

IMMO they should change the direction in whicch the runways face, cross a couple so it will be an advanatge in cross-wind sitations...

@ mahdial_x5

Well, aren't parallel runways the trend nowadays. I mean, almost all new airports have parallel runway lay-outs. Airports with criss-crossing runways cannot maximize the usage of their runways because the usage of one prevents any usage from the other/s.

Besides, there are complete turn around taxi-ways [at Dubai World Central] before and after every runway so that the landing-take-off potential capacity of these runways are optimized/maximized.

Although, I think having six runways is tad too much, IMHO.

Heck, this entire project is a tad too much.

Jeez, can you imagine the amount of concrete that would be required to build this thing. Just look at all those sprawling aprons, big runways, and wide taxi-ways.

i think this is too much.an a320 for sure will consume at least 5 tonnes of avgas from one remote parking bay to the a runway that is located in the other side? you'll spend at least 10 minutes taxiing alone.a waste of money? but this idea is yet to be tested.

I think this airport can easily eat up traffics at all london's aiports.

i don't think that's the trend, but limitation for many airport where has no choice. as long as they don't cross each other both land and in the air, sure the airports can operate air traffic in any wind direction and more runways.

sorry to say that, but it's just another typical Dubai's wasting money project. it's just way too big and inefficient.

may be: 36R, R36R, 36CR, 36CL, L36L, 36L

or just don't use the other three

I would like to be totally optimistic about Dubai and the rest of the gulf region's developments but I also think that this airport would be able handle all of London's traffic (Heathrow, Gatwick, Stansted, Luton, City). Hell I bet this airport could handle all the A320/737/MD80 and regional jet traffic that Atlanta, JFK and O'Hare combined.

@ FM2258

I think this thing is too much. This thing could literally handle all air traffic of the Middle-East Region.

Either 1R, 1C & 1L or 35R, 35C & 35L. Runways usually do not face a rounded direction [like 360 degrees or 70 degrees] they are usually more like 354 degrees or 82 degrees. So they choose the directions that border the direction on each side.

When there is over six, well I do not know, but no airport is there yet.

Crosswind runways are inefficient because they cannot be used simultaneously. They are also obselete as commercial aircraft these days can land in crosswinds that arise in most non-convective situations.

Not all airports have crosswind runways. Cities like Atlanta(ATL), Hong Kong(HKG), London Heathrow and many others do fine without the crosswind.
