Concourse 3 to be completed by 2011
By Saifur Rahman, Business Editor
Published: April 25, 2009, 22:44

Dubai: Concourse 3 - the last major project at the Dubai International Airport, the region's biggest aviation hub - will be completed by the end of 2011, which will help increase the airport's passenger handling capacity to 80 million from the initially planned 70 million, a top official said.

When completed, Dubai International Airport will have three terminals and three concourses, two cargo 'mega' terminals, an airport free zone, an expo centre with three large exhibition halls, a major aircraft maintenance hub and a flower centre to handle perishable goods.

Paul Griffiths, chief executive of Dubai Airports Company, which has the mandate to operate both Dubai International and Dubai World Central-Al Maktoum International (DWC-AMI) in Jebel Ali, also confirmed that phase one of the DWC-AMI would be open by June 2010.

Dubai airport traffic up 10.3% in June
by Rob Morris on Monday, 20 July 2009

Passenger traffic at Dubai airport climbed more than 10 percent last month following an increase in summer travel, the hub’s operator revealed on Monday.

Dubai Airports said the hub handled 3,361,413 travellers in June – a 10.3 percent rise compared to 3,048,220 during the same period in 2008.

During this year’s opening half, Dubai airport handled 19,453,775 passengers, representing a five percent increase from last year.

Cargo handling was down 2.3 percent to 152,278 tonnes in June from 155,919 tonnes the previous year.

“Passenger traffic is on the rise and cargo is holding its own in a very tough economic environment,” said Paul Griffiths, CEO of Dubai Airports.

“Growth is being driven by strong demand during the peak summer period, the growing strength and attractiveness of the Dubai hub, underpinned by the continued expansion of Emirates, and an influx of new airlines at a rate of one per month.”

He added the outlook for passenger traffic beyond the summer was positive.

“The fact that Dubai International is recording double-digit passenger growth during the deepest global recession in decades bodes well for the future. When the current economic situation improves, Dubai will be in good shape, ready to lead the global recovery in air travel” Griffiths said.

Red Line offers vital link to airport
By Ashfaq Ahmed, Chief Reporter
Published: July 30, 2009, 22:31

Dubai: Two airport metro stations built quite close to each other on the Red Line will serve hundreds of thousands of passengers and employees every day.

One of the Metro stations will serve passengers at the Terminal 1 while the other one will cater to commuters at the Terminal 3 which was opened later last year.

The distance between the two stations is about 700 metres. Airport passengers can use these stations to directly access the terminal buildings without having to endure the heat outside.

Air-conditioned walkways equipped with escalators and elevators have been built to link the arrival and departures lounges of the terminal buildings with the stations.

More than 100,000 passengers use the Dubai airport every day while the number of passengers stood at 37.44 million last year.

Apart from passengers, thousands of employees from various private and public departments and companies will have easy access to the airport if they use the Metro.

The Metro link to the airport will provide a huge relief for passengers especially on arrivals as they can save a lot of money on expensive taxi fare.

Airport taxis charge Dh20 as starting fare in addition to the fare for the distance covered. The maximum metro fare ranges from the minimum Dh1.8 charge to Dh6.5 for a single journey.

Also visitors to the airport can save a lot of money on hefty parking fees. The minimum charge for parking at Terminal 3 is Dh10 for 30 minutes. Long term parking at Terminal 1 costs at least Dh5 for 30 minutes.

A Dubai International Airport spokesperson said: "Dubai Airports is working very closely with the RTA to ensure a smooth Metro start-up in terms of its integration with airport operational processes and facilities.

"To that end we have successfully completed the Terminal 3 Metro Ticketing Concourse and Station. The Ticketing Concourse is located underneath the main Terminal three-roof canopy on the departures level and is connected to the station via link bridges."

The Red Line of the Metro is scheduled to open in September.

Dubai passenger numbers up 12.6% in July

Dubai International Airport has registered a 12.6 percent increase in the number of passengers during July – the highest monthly growth rate since May last year.

The figures released on Wednesday by the Dubai aviation authority showed the airport saw the second consecutive month of double-digit growth this year.

“The double-digit increases we’ve seen in the past two months are the direct result of a boost in passenger numbers from Emirates and other long-haul network carriers and continual growth in the low cost sector,” said Paul Griffiths, CEO of Dubai Airports.

According to the figures, Dubai International airport handled a total of 3,768, 965 passengers in July, compared to 3,347,655 for the same month the previous year.

The total amount of this year’s traffic to date is also up 6.1 percent from the same period in 2008, rising to 23,148,452 passengers.

Dubai International airport is now ranked the world’s sixth busiest airport in terms of International passengers according to Airport Council International’s (ACI) latest published figures.

Meanwhile, Dubai Airports Cargo saw a 1.9 percent increase in the weight of freight it handled in July.

This went from 157,253 tonnes during July 2008 to 160,289 tonnes in July 2009, Dubai Airports said.

Dubai Airports Expects 13.6 Pct Passenger Growth In 2010
September 14, 2009 18:11 PM
By Abdul Muin Majid

DUBAI, Sept 14 (Bernama) -- Dubai Airports on Monday issued its updated traffic forecast for Dubai International Airport and Dubai World Central-Al Maktoum International (DWC-AMI) projecting a 13.6 per cent international passenger traffic growth in 2010.

According to the Emirate's airport operator, total passenger traffic is expected to reach 40.5 million by end-2009 and top 46 million in 2010.

Dubai Airports' Chief Executive Officer Paul Griffiths said the growth would be driven by improving economic conditions, state-of-the-art infrastructure, strong expansion by Emirates Airline and emerging low-cost carrier, Flydubai.

Another factor will be an open sky policy that promotes market access to other international airlines, he said, adding that Dubai's location and advancements in aircraft technology would also be key contributing factors.

"The first phase of DWC-AMI is expected to stimulate traffic when it opens in June 2010," said Dubai Airports, adding that an estimated one million passengers are anticipated to pass through the new airportduring the abbreviated operational period in 2010.

DWC-AMI will eventually become the world's largest airport handling 160 million passengers and 12 million tonnes of cargo per year.

Griffiths said aviation is big business in Dubai accounting for at least 25 per cent of Dubai's Gross Domestic Product.
