The tube section looks just like bangkok's. The interior reminds me of a Las Vegas hotel or something. One question though. Why an underground terminal? I just personally think that its unnessary. Dubai has plenty of land.

Well this airport is in the middle of the city so they've got limited space to build on.

Here are a few shots i took in July last year. Existing concours (Sheikh Zayed Terminal) and the Tower.
In the background are a few of the hundred construction cranes at the site.

View from inside the concourse, across the tarmac is the old terminal and tower which is now the arrival/departure terminal connected to the concourse by an underground tunnel.

View from the cafeteria located in the Departure area of the old terminal.

the existing concourse is okay.. but the variety of restaurants is quite limited.. and i don't like the tacky lights hung from the roof...

i doubt it.. a new airport will be built, which is a part of Dubai Logistics City, there will be subway connecting the two airports. Jebel Ali will mainly be used for freighters/cargo planes..

DIA looks nice but after a while i was bored with everything that it offers. y did i say that? was there once, on my way back to KUL, i was stranded there for more that 10hrs, no accomodation given and no logical reason given by Emirates. even the person behind the info counter was lost for words and eventually turned hostile when passengers demand to know y.. we were called for breakfast at 4am, went to the said restaurant, and the person said 'oh sir, our restaurant only opens from 0600 onwards.' and the way they treated the asian expats, esp from the sub continents.. pathetic.
to me, first impression lasts forever, now i am avoiding DIA . i am using Doha Intl as my transit point for my next trip to KUL, heard people at Doha are friendlier..

Dubai...unveils $33B airport city

Dubai unveils $33 bln airport city

DUBAI (Reuters) - Gulf tourism and trade hub Dubai said on Tuesday it plans to invest $33 billion in building what it said would be the world's largest airport and city in Jebel Ali, home to the region's biggest free-trade zone.

A statement by organizers of the state-run project, Dubai World Central, said the multi-phase 140 sq km (54 square mile) development around the planned international airport will include a cargo city, residential and commercial quarters and a Golf course.

Dubai is pouring hundreds of billions of dollars into infrastructure and real estate developments, making it home to an estimated 17 percent of the world's cranes.

"Dubai World Central International Airport (JXB) ... when complete will be the world's largest with a capacity equal to that currently of Chicago's O'Hare and London's Heathrow (combined)," it said.

"Dubai World Central will be a new city where eventually some 750,000 people will live and work," it said, adding the project was designed to support Dubai's aviation, tourism, commercial and logistics requirements until 2050.

The airport will have a capacity of 120 million passengers and 12 million tonnes of cargo per year. It will have six 4.5 kilometer runways capable of receiving all aircraft, including the double-decker Airbus 380.

The three-terminal airport will dedicate one of its hubs to low-cost airlines, it said. It will be linked to the Dubai International Airport via an express rail system.

Passenger traffic at Dubai International Airport increased 14 percent in 2005 to 24 million people compared with 2004.

The airport expects 28 million passengers and 1.5 million tonnes of freight in 2006.

On Monday, Dubai announced plans to build the world's largest hotel as part of a $27 billion resort project to spearhead its drive to become a global tourism hub.

I'll go there when they can figure out a way to prevent the desert from getting so damned hot.

This is the old Jebel Ali Airport City project that has been renamed to "Dubai World Centre".

Here's the link to the project thread

This project is amazing but pointless. Dubai's population isn't that big and to have a airport and a city this scale is kinda ridiculous. Wheres the demand, even with tourism booming the Dubai Internatinal Airport is more than enough.

This was announced a year ago and the full thing will take 20 years to build. They'll start with a cargo terminal and add more as they go along

That looks more like a resort than a airport.

Everything they're building there looks like a resort!!! It's all starting to blend together. Huge attempts at building fake cities are everywhere in the UAE. I've seen pictures of the real Dubai, and I would be ashamed to be living in a city whose character is being killed by a new monstrosity being built every day. I respect projects like the Burj Dubai (the tower, not the complex around it) because it has good architecture and builds an original Dubai character. But I simply can't stand the waste of billions of dollars on these horrible Disney resorts in the desert.
