Whoa, that was Dubai before becoming EK's mega-hub? That is really interesting... Must've been those huge oil investments that made the mega-airport of DXB possible, and it looks like comparing those pics with today, it's more than just night and day; it's more like a huge jump from being a small airfield to a mega-hub for over 100 world destinations. Amazing historical shots!

^The pictures look the same as the footage in the video I posted from JU's stop over flight to SYD during the 1980s. Here is the video from a flight from BEG to SYD with a stopover in Dubai. FF to 1:40sec.

Looks like they kept the old terminal as well as the old ATC tower. Maybe they can turn it into some museum. haha

It's the citys Metro Red Line that goes all the way to Palm Jebel Ali. That station on the picture is Terminal 3. It's also the worlds longest driverless/automated metro line.

If you look down the tracks after that left bend is Terminal 1 Metro Station. If you take a closer look you can see the Metro tube entance connecting to the terminal.

Well, Dubai in itself is not just a mega-hub for EK, but also an important business center in the Gulf Region, serving passengers from as close as the Indian Subcontinent to as far as one can see... Imagine that most of the big cities in the world are connected in some way to Dubai.

In fact, Emirates will open a fourth daily flight between Dubai and the Philippines, this time through Clark in Pampanga province, starting 1 October 2013. With this service, it will mean even more flight choices for Manila-bound passengers, serving both northern and southern parts of the every-growing Megalopolis. Schedule:

EK338 DXB0400 – 1640CRK 77W D
EK339 CRK1835 – 2305DXB 77W D

DXB confirmed as world’s second busiest international airport

Quote:
March 28, 2013

Dubai International has been confirmed as the world’s second busiest airport for international passenger traffic, moving ahead of Paris’ Charles de Gaulle airport for the first time.

Since the start of the year Dubai International has moved up two positions in the global rankings and now has London Heathrow’s title as the world’s busiest international airport firmly within its sights. The move up the rankings was confirmed by the latest figures published by Airports Council International.
