Don't know if you guys have seen this. It's about the project Dubai World Central; the airport that will have a 100+ million capacity.

Apparently they want to revolutionize the idea of an airport with minimal amount of lines and make it as convenient as possible.
Looking forward to see it's development!

Dubai Airports announces $32bn DWC airport expansion plan

Quote:
Dubai Airports this week announced a AED120bn (US$ 32bn) expansion of Al Maktoum International at Dubai World Central (DWC) which will ultimately accommodate more than 200 million passengers a year.

The development is anticipated to be the biggest airport project in the world and will be built in two phases. The first phase includes two satellite buildings which will collectively be able to accommodate 120 million passengers annually, receive 100 A380 aircraft at any one time and will take between six and eight years to complete. The entire development will cover an area of 56 square kilometres.

More than its size, the new airport’s uniqueness lies in a radically new approach to ensure that the latest technology and efficient processes will cut the time spent completing travel formalities and reduce walking distances, enabling passengers to make fast and efficient connections between hundreds of destinations worldwide.

With passenger traffic expected to reach almost 100 million at Dubai International by the end of 2020, the further development of DWC will be a vital step towards providing the necessary facilities to accommodate passenger and cargo growth in the decades ahead and pave the way for Emirates to relocate their intercontinental hub operations to DWC by the mid-2020s.

“Our future lies at DWC. The announcement of this AED120bn development of DWC is both timely and a strong endorsement of Dubai’s aviation industry. With limited options for further growth at Dubai International, we are taking that next step to securing our future by building a brand new airport that will not only create the capacity we will need in the coming decades but also provide state of the art facilities that revolutionise the airport experience on an unprecedented scale,” said Griffiths.

There was a medical emergency on my flight at DXB. It was pretty serious too (the guy was really old). I was shocked how bad the training was. Our plane was far away from the terminals (which is usual for flight to Pakistan). Firstly the two ambulances kept driving around trying to figure out where to park. That circus went on for two minutes.

Finally they decided where to park. Then they had to transport the guy form the lift (that picked the guy from the plane) to the ambulance. Now these jokers had absolutely no clue how to do it. They didn't even know where equipment was. They kept going looking for whatever it was they were looking for in the ambulances.

Then they kept palying with the platofrm that raises and lowers. Even then they didn't know how to transport the guy. So after trying everything and failing, they put the stretcher on the ground and then lifted it.

The whole thing took more than 5 minutes (I took a video and pics but won't post them out of respect). That could be the difference between life and death for someone.

Dubai International has overtaken London Heathrow !!!!

It’s official. Dubai International Airport has overtaken London Heathrow as the world’s busiest for international passenger traffic.

A total of 68.9 million passengers had passed through Dubai International compared with 67.8 million at Heathrow as of December 22, data from the Airports Council International showed.

DIA was at its busiest ever last week when it processed a record 638,317 passengers between December 18 and December 24, Dubai Airports said.

Figures from the airport operator for November, which were released this morning, showed that passenger traffic was up 4.3 per cent year-on-year to 5.5 million. Year-to-date traffic rose 5.9 per cent to 63.9 million passengers, compared with 60.3 million passengers recorded during the first 11 months of last year.

The rise in passenger numbers at DIA this year came despite the use of only a single runway for 80 days because of a refurbishment scheme that caused a temporary decline in flights.

“Given the traffic achieved in the first 11 months, together with some of the busiest days on record in December, we are confident of ending the year above the 70 million mark and confirming our position as the world’s busiest international airport,” said Paul Griffiths, the chief executive of Dubai Airports.

“Looking forward to 2015, the prospects remain exceedingly bright and we expect to maintain the growth achieved this year in the next 12 months.”

Dubai Airports also said that it plans to open Concourse D in the first half of next year.

Am I the only one who thinks this will never get built, at least to the extent they're stating?

I have doubts about this project as well. It seems too good to be true, the project might be largely scaled down to practical standards.

Who would have thought 20 years ago that DXB would now be the 7th busiest airport in the world now. Correct me if I'm wrong but only major Chinese airports such as Beijing and Shanghai have seen such phenomenal growth.

That is quite a milestone:

Dubai overtakes Heathrow as top international airport

Last Updated: Wednesday, January 28, 2015, 00:27

Quote:
Dubai airport has soared ahead of London`s Heathrow, riding a boom in long-haul flights between Asia and the West to become the world`s top international travel hub, it said Tuesday.

Traffic at the airport increased 6.1 percent last year to 70.47 million passengers, Dubai Airports said, adding that it expected a further surge in traveller numbers in 2015.

Dubai International is home to Emirates, the Middle East`s largest carrier, which along with Abu Dhabi`s Etihad and Qatar Airways has seized a significant portion of travel between the West, Asia and Australasia.

"This historic milestone is the culmination of over five decades of double-digit average growth," Dubai Airports Chairman Sheikh Ahmed bin Saeed al-Maktoum said in a statement.

"The shared goal is to make Dubai a global centre of aviation and we are nearing that goal," he said.

My flight to DBX to DOH last week. We use Airbus A330

I didn't know they are expanding the terminal at the current airport. I thought all flights will be move to the DWC.

This was bound to happen eventually as Heathrow is landlocked and cannot expand easily, and has a lot of current restrictions. There is a strong possibility that Paris-CDG, Frankfurt, and Amsterdam will overtake Heathrow in passenger/cargo traffic as well.
