Brussels was dirtier than Vienna IMO. Nothing will reach the cleanliness of Helsinki though. You could have eaten off the ground in that city.

We can also easily assume, that Belgium in general is dirtier than Austria.

What is a colourkey effect?

Great city, awesome pictures. I like your style a lot Kampflamm. I'd nominate this as one of the candidates for the thread of the year competition, if there was one.

The colourkey effect: Do you know the movie Sin City? It is made with colorkey.
It's when a part of the picture is in colour, and the rest in black and white.
Take a look at the picture of Votivkirche (church) in post #25, third picture.

Why have so many houses been raped by adding modern rooftops? Some additions look alright but many of them are just downright disgusting.

because....
1. it's cheaper to extend a rooftop of an existing building and use the existing infrastructure (canal, gas, water, streets, public transport, ...) then building somewhere on the edge of the city a completely new district where you also have to add shopping and other facilities, despite the fact that those people have to use the car to go to work and therefore produce traffic...
2. you can make a lot of money with penthouses.

I dont think so. I consider most of those Dachausbauten to be acceptable, some even nice. There some I really can't understand how they could be permitted though, thats true and a certain number is hideous.

The reason why they exist is easy. They are especially popular on the buildings from the late 19th / early 20th century buildings. They would support a few more floors from structural aspects. As Vienna is a capital and somewhat vibrant city and not an open air museum (alone), there was demand of a further increase of density in many parts of the city. Most buildings from that time furthermore host not all too exciting roofs anyway, (except maybe for the corner buildings sometimes)

Maybe this issue would justify buying that brochure:

Yeah, some of them look quite alright. It just thought it was interesting that so many buildings had these. Maybe I just don't notice this in Germany since we have hardly any pre-war buildings left in our city.

I guess it's gotta do with money, money, money. These Inner City lofts are damn expensive - you can make lots and lots by selling them.
