Jean Nouvel
DR Concert Hall
Copenhagen, Denmark

The architecture dematerializes and becomes a matter of light and surface effects.

The opening of the DR Concert Hall on January 17th means a national and international concert venue for Denmark and a new architectural landmark for the capital.
The complex, part of the TV network’s new Headquarters in Copenhagen, contains all facilities for Danish Broadcasting Corporation’s music production.

Jean Nouvel presented the new building for the press on Friday January 16th.

“The first idea for the building was the concept of the blue screen, a kind of lantern magic, because of the exceptional situation of the urban condition being a new development. I try to be a contextual architect and generally like to have a dialogue with my neighbors, but in this new urban situation I did not know my neighbors. So I tried to think about myself an an architect in the 11th century who had to build a Cathedral in a city in Europe, and how the buildings then happened around the Cathedral. This was possible because this is probably the largest and most public building here.

The idea after was to create a kind of question “What is this building?”
When you see the building during the day you have a kind of feeling for what is behind the screen, but not really, and it changes a lot with the light. When the sun is lower you see the skyline of the building inside and the framing of the glass facade behind the screen. It is a paradox between a very simple building, and you feel that inside, but you don’t really know what is there, only that it is complex. So it is this relationship between simplicity and complexity that is the base of the design.
So the idea was to create a kind of small world belonging to the Concert Hall with a lot of specific singular details, materials and spaces, so when you open a door from one studio to another it is always a new feeling, a new ambience.
That is really the basic architectural idea of the building.”
Jean Nouvel

Best outside picture of the concert hall so far - although major adjustments clearly still remain

I like the interior, this looks great. I also like the rock-shaped exterior. But i realy don't understand why they build something like a screen around it. That's such a shame, because now you can't see the beautiful rock anymore, but just a dull box. As a visitor of Copenhagen i would drive by it without even noticing the masterpiece because it is hidden.

Skin material?

Anyone know the exact material used for the exterior skin of this project? We are hoping to use a similar technique but are having a hard time finding any information on it. The best I've found is Ferrari Fabrics, but it would be helpful to know what was used here.. Thanks.

What project are you working on? And whom are you working for?

This is getting ridiculous.
This can mean something special to a person or small number of people but this looks like a bunch of cardboard.
There is nothing beautiful or timeless about it.

I have faith in Nouvel, and the Danish Government. Judging by their previous choices in public building design, I'm sure they chose well on this occasion.

One thing is for sure; when the Concert Hall is finished, it'll either be one of the greatest buildings on Earth, or one of the worst. It's a polarising design.

The building is finished. Inside it's one of the greatest buildings on earth - outside one of the worst.

Chances for it being one of the greatest are slim.
It is so faddish.

I had my first concert experience in there tonight and I must say, that it is a marvelous building. Fantastic. Acoustically - front row, section E -, however, it was weird. Still a lot of adjustments need to be carried out - the strings were too distant in the sound picture. It was even muddy at sometimes.

BTW: I wouldn't call the concert hall completed - that's why I haven't made a request for change of the thread title. There is still A LOT to be done out there and as I understand it work will resume all the way through the summer.

Just wait until the building is fully completed and some of the top notch photographers of architecture get out there.

The interior looks awesome. Unfortunately I don't know if anyone can say the same thing about the exterior. Maybe they got out of money, who knows?
Anyway, I'd like to go there for a concert. I bet it's great!
