High density is always good. It is the silly curved forms of the buildings that I dislike. Completely ruins the setting. Their design looks cheesy as well. I want something more solid, and more rectilinear around the power station.

Renders of the Chelsea Stadium plans at Battersea are in Property Week today apparently but, sadly, are behind a paywall. Can anyone who is a PW subscriber upload the images please?

A quick google search came up with these - don't think they've been posted before and most likely not what you're looking for... That aside, I actually quite like the second one!

Personally, I think they should knock the whole bloody power station down and start from scratch...

From the AJ:

Quote:
Chelsea FC has revealed images of how it intended to convert Battersea Power Station into its new home

Working with architect KPF and developer Almacantar, the club lost out in the battle to win an exclusivity agreement to buy the 15-hectare riverside site to a Malaysian-based team earlier this month (AJ 07.06.2012).

However sources say the club has not yet given up hope on its vision to transform Giles Gilbert Scott’s abandoned landmark into a 60,000-seat stadium and is still in the running if the £400 million deal with prefered bidders SP Setia and Sime Darby collapses.

The never-before-seen KPF design would integrate the stadium with the power station ‘in a sensitive, unique and powerful way, with all significant historical aspects of the power station to be retained’.

The proposals would preserve the four chimneys and wash towers as well as the west turbine hall and control room which would be restored.

Chelsea FC statement

Quote:
‘It is important that our fans understand that Chelsea Football Club is not currently in discussions with the sellers of the site. The sellers have selected a Malaysian consortium as their preferred bidders, and we understand negotiations are continuing. We do not know if those negotiations will be successful or not.

‘As per our previous statement, and as these images show, we believe the prospect of developing a new stadium on the site could be very attractive for the club, and would have the potential to become one of the most iconic stadiums in the world, offering many benefits for Wandsworth, for London, and, of course, for Chelsea fans. We firmly believe our proposals could address the unique challenges presented by the site.’

It would have looked pretty good inside but I think most of use were more interested in how it might have looked from the outside.

I prefer the first proposal shown on Megalothian's post - although the relationship of new to old could be refined, putting the stadium in the centre of the power station with the chimneys in front appears to work well. Just to use the power station as a housing for one stand seems very odd to me, it is ambiguous about what is the prime element, the old power plant or the new stadium, and it seems a poor use of the turbine hall and its volumetric space just to use it as a shell or facade around a stand. All said, I'm not going to spill a tear that this proposal is unlikely to happen.

I am surprised people like these designs.

Battersea power station is an eyesore, god knows how it is a listed building.

These designs look absolutely ridiculous. In the eye's of the people who have chosen to protect the building, how is completely transforming it into an awkward looking stadium going to please them. I am not surprised it has not been approved.

You have to say that it would look a lot better without the power station awkwardly protruding out of it.

Knock it down, build a nice modern stadium, with the nice landscaping and port.

If the above plans were to go ahead then the side of it will look similar and probably worse than Ibrox, which is one of the most hideous stadiums out there, it looks like a prison:

Ohh, so your also someone who can't take a joke? Ah, never mind...and I think the power station SHOULD be preserved because imo, it is an iconic structure that deserves to be redeveloped. You happy now?

Rangers FC went out of their way to keep the historic aspect of Ibrox Park, rather than knock it down and start again. They chose not to shoot themselves in the foot by demolishing their greatest asset. It's one of the most loved stadium in the UK, much like Tate Modern in London is one of the most visited art galleries. Battersea power station is listed because it should be, and in this era of all modern stadiums looking the same it would have become one of the most dramatic stadiums in the world.

Wonder why they haven't released any renders of the outside. Probably because a great chunk of a stadium sticking out the side is going to look terrible.

Chelsea plans for Battersea Power Station stadium extinguished

-- Link to Independent article --

Chelsea's hopes of moving to Battersea Power Station have been extinguished after a Malaysian consortium completed a £400million purchase of the London landmark. The Blues are considering moving away from Stamford Bridge and had lodged a bid to move to the iconic 39-acre site on the south bank of the River Thames.

The west Londoners released plans in May that detailed how they hoped to turn the derelict site in to a 60,000-seater stadium incorporating the four famous chimneys. Administrators Ernst & Young revealed last month that they had shunned the Blues' offer, opting instead to name a Malaysian consortium as the preferred bidders. And after a 28-day due diligence process, the consortium's bid has been rubber-stamped.

"Following a global marketing process that started in February 2012 and covered all major world wealth centres, a consortium comprising SP Setia, Sime Darby and the Employees' Pension Fund of Malaysia have exchanged contracts on the (Battersea) site for £400m," a statement from Ernst & Young read.

The consortium have planning consent to build 3,500 homes and 1.7 million square feet of office space. They also plan to build a tube station on the premises that will connect to the Northern Line. Last year Chelsea failed in their bid to buy back the freehold of the 42,000-capacity Stamford Bridge from supporters group Chelsea Pitch Owners.

Battersea purchase deal signed in Island ( Jersey )

A DEAL was signed in Jersey this week for a Malaysian consortium to buy London’s iconic Battersea power station for £400 million – the same amount paid for the site in 2006 by a locally-based property fund.

And the new owners now intend to push ahead with an £8 billion redevelopment project that is expected to take 15 years to complete on the 39.1 acre site.

Three parties formally entered into the joint venture agreement on Wednesday to form the Battersea Project Holding Co Limited.

And subsidiary business Battersea Project Land Co Ltd subsequently signed a sale and purchase agreement with administrators from Ernst & Young.

From the Independent: 26 July: http://www.independent.co.uk/news/bu...d-7976571.html

Plans for an £8bn redevelopment of Battersea power station were announced last night as a precursor for a series of trade deals that the Government hopes will be clinched during the Olympic Games.

The Malaysian owners of the iconic building are to create 33,000 jobs, comprising 20,000 building jobs and 13,000 permanent posts, as they convert the building into a Thames-side complex containing shops, offices, homes and a hotel.

The listed building has been semi-derelict for almost 30 years since it stopped generating electricity and a series of proposals to convert it have fallen by the wayside. Among them was a bid to develop a huge indoor theme park based around Britain’s industrial heritage and a proposal for a giant shopping mall.

Work on the redevelopment scheme, which will also encompass an extension of the Northern Line underground and the construction of two tube stations, is set to begin next summer.

Several bids were received for the power station – including a proposal from Chelsea FC to build a stadium on the site – after it was put up for sale in February.

The Malaysian developers, SP Setia and Sime Darby, were chosen and have formed a consortium with the Employees' Pension Fund of Malaysia to transform the power station. It is understood the deal will be finalised in September.

Boris Johnson, the Mayor of London, said: “It is brilliant this historic landmark that helped power London for much of the 20th century will be at the centre of this huge regeneration project that will also help power the capital to even greater economic prosperity in the 21st.

“In the coming weeks, with major global investors in town for the games, I am embarking on a gigantic schmooze-athon to highlight this and the wealth of other amazing investment opportunities that exist.”

Ministers held back the Battersea announcement until the eve of the Global Investment Conference in London that will be attended by many of the world’s leading business figures and policy-makers.

David Cameron has said he hopes the Olympics will help to generate trade deals and investment worth £13bn in the long-term. They include £1bn of deals the Government expects to announce this summer.

The Prime Minister will tell the conference: “My message today is very simple: Britain is back open for business and we are committed to supporting global growth with open trade between our nations.

“So invest in Britain, partner with Britain. Not just to invest in this country, but because this is the place, the hub, from which your company can grow and expand.”

Speakers at the event include the International Monetary Fund director general Christine Lagarde, the Bank of England Governor Sir Mervyn King and Google’s executive chairman Eric Schmidt.

Nick Clegg, the deputy Prime Minister, said: "The Olympics presents us with a once-in-a-lifetime opportunity to boost the UK's growth potential. Our world-beating innovation in green technology and advanced manufacturing are on show for a vast global audience, and today we can be proud of those achievements.”
