DMRC signs MoU for high-speed rly line in Kerala

Delhi Metro Rail Corporation (DMRC), on Tuesday, signed a Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) to provide consultancy for a high speed railway line in Kerala between Thiruvananthapuram and Kasaragod.

"This is DMRC's first-ever consultancy project for a high speed rail corridor and we plan to engage Japanese experts who have been associated with bullet trains, for the study. So far, DMRC has provided consultancy for the construction of Metro corridors in many cities of the country. A MoU to this effect was signed between Kerala State Industrial Development Corporation (KSIDC) managing director Alkesh Sharma and DMRCs director (works) Mangu Singh,'' said a DMRC spokesperson.

As per the MoU, the DMRC will provide consultancy for a pre feasibility study for the 550-kilometre long rail corridor.

It is proposed that trains on the line be run at a speed of about 275-300 kilometres per hour on the standard gauge (1,435 mm) high speed rail corridor. Initially, eight stations have been planned at Thiruvananthapuram, Quilon, Kottayam, Ernakulam, Thrissur, Calicut, Kannur and Kasaragod. Three more stations at Chengannur, Tirur and Thalassery may be constructed in the future.

Freight management goes online in Thiruvananthapuram Railway division

It is reported that fifteen Freight Operation Information System terminals have been sanctioned for various goods handling points in the Thiruvananthapuram Railway Division. FOIS is a system for management and control of freight movement that also assists managers to optimise asset utilisation.

It enables customers to have instant access to information on the current status of consignments in transit for just in time inventory.

According to the divisional railway manager, Thiruvananthapuram FOIS will enable traders to monitor arrival of the freight train, plan out the receipt and dispatch of consignments to the intended locations, besides providing adequate time to arrange for labor.

Kerala’s serene beaches, tranquil stretches of emerald backwaters, lush hill stations and exotic wildlife has emerged as the winning combination for the travellers to vote the state as the best Asian holiday destination ahead of Bali, Phuket and the Maldives.

The accolade was revealed in the ‘Best in Travel poll 2010’ carried out by an independent online travel magazine Smart Travel Asia. It is a destination of reader’s perception and favourite travel brands. The poll, conducted throughout May-July this year, puts the spotlight on ‘aspirational” brands and travel trends in the region.

Bali and Phuket were voted as second and third most favourite holiday destinations in Asia. The only other Indian destinations to be listed in the top 10 were Rajasthan and Goa which came in at eighth and tenth spot respectively.

“This is phenomenal recognition for the state and the people who are in the tourism sector, delivering an inspirational experience. Keralites should feel very proud of their contribution to this fantastic international achievement”, says Secretary, Kerala Tourism, V. Venu. The awards are unique because they single out not just popular places but truly exceptional places that enthrall travellers and keep them coming back, he added.

The vote is based on actual travel experience, word-of-mouth, as well as an idea of the brand drawn from ads and PR. Voters polled in 12 categories including Asia's best business hotels, luxury resorts, spas, destinations, business cities, shopping spots, and the world's best airlines and airports.

Bangalore figures in the eighth position in the top 10 cities in Asia for businesses. Jet Airways figure in the top 10 airlines worldwide and those for business class and for cabin services. In the category of budget airline, Spice jet and Kingfisher Red figure in the top 10.

Approximately 60 per cent of voters are based in Asia (largely Singapore, Australia, Hong Kong, India, China, Japan, Malaysia, Thailand, Philippines, and the Middle East), 20 per cent in UK/Europe and 20 per cent in USA and North America.

On average, voters took 13.56 air trips over the last 12 months and earned US$164,501 in household income. Smart Travel Asia has over one million readers worldwide.
Cheers!!!

Kudos to the Commissioner

The City Police Commissioner, Mr. MR Ajithkumar IPS, and his men received all round praise for their efficient management of law and order during the Onam celebrations this year. Though lakhs participated in the fairs and events across 18 venues for the two weeks, not even a single petty crime was reported. The Commissioner had even given his mobile number (9497996991) to which any citizen could SMS their complaints instantly. To his credit, none of the citizens ever needed to use this!

Administrative tribunal from September 3

THIRUVANANTHAPURAM: The Kerala Administrative Tribunal for dealing with the service complaints of government employees will start functioning here, with former High Court judge K.Balakrishnan Nair assuming charge as chairman, on September 3, Law and Public Works Minister M. Vijayakumar has said.

Mr. Vijayakumar told reporters here on Tuesday that the tribunal would function at the old collectorate complex at Vanchiyoor. The Central gazette notification setting up the tribunal was issued on August 25. Service cases pending at the High Court will be transferred to the tribunal which will have a single bench and a division bench. The formation of the tribunal is expected to reduce the pendency and expenses incurred by the government for conducting the cases at the High Court.

High Court Bench

Mr. Vijayakumar accused the Central government of delaying a decision on reviving the High Court Bench in the capital. The State government had completed all formalities and it was for the Centre to decide. Unlike the case of other States, there was no need for a policy decision in the case of Thiruvananthapuram.

High Court Bench-The proposal was not for establishing a new Bench, but reviving one which had been functioning here earlier

High court advocates assc opposes tribunal

SAT headquarters: hearing adjourned
Kochi: A Division Bench of the Kerala High Court on Thursday adjourned to September 6 the hearing on a writ petition seeking a directive to make Kochi the headquarters of the newly constituted State Administrative Tribunal (SAT). In a petition, Baisil Attipetty contended that by making Thiruvananthapuram the headquarters of the SAT, the government was doing a disservice to the government employees spread across the State. According to him, the Supreme Court had held that the administrative tribunal should be set up at a place where the High Court was functioning. The Kerala High Court Advocates' Association proposed to file a petition challenging the constitution of the tribunal

No wonder bench or chair is so hard to come.

The irony is that govt offices are easily moved all over kerala as per whims and fancies of politicians. (irrespective of beaurocrats opposition).

Yesterday, I was mentioning this. First they opposed the second Tribunal at Calicut. This was expected. These kind of Idiots are the curse of the state. For them two tribunals in the state are disservice to the gov employees(most of them are in Trivandrum)? Are not they triggering the root causes for regionalist militancy.

Hey, this is really good! Thanks for the video link Vinod

Mr. YukeTrivandrum, your work is really nice. Good efforts. Perhaps its a good idea from Vinod to make a video album based on the city. There are good few city-themed videos which've gone viral in webspace. Even now Sudheesh bhai's Trivandrum documentary, TDF's Intelligent Trivandrum and Tom's Shankhumugham video are the ones which prop up on the front page on a Youtube search.

This Vancouver time-lapse during the Winter Olympics this year is one of the most foot-tapping city based theme music I've seen. Remains one of my favourites.
