Where migrant workers shop…

Bengali, Oriya, and various dialects of Hindi can heard at the market. The physical features of the clientele too betray the fact that they come from outside the State

Trivandrum is surprisingly missing from McKinsley 600 cities list.
Trivandrum was there for years together.
There is some error as even smaller cities like,....Thrissur,Thalasseri and Kollam is listed.

Is it due to indefenite posponing of VISL ?

Pranab to campaign in Kerala Wednesday

Thiruvananthapuram, July 4 (IANS) UPA presidential candidate Pranab Mukherjee will arrive here Wednesday as part of his poll campaign and meet Kerala Chief Minister Oommen Chandy and other leaders.

Mukherjee will meet leaders and legislators of all the parties in the state barring the Communist Party of India and Revolutionary Socialist Party, both of whom have decided to abstain from voting in the poll.

Chief whip in the Kerala Assembly P.C.George told IANS that Mukherjee will arrive Wednesday morning and leave the same day.

"Since the assembly is in session, a time schedule has been given to each party and their legislators to meet Mukherjee. The Left opposition in the assembly will meet him around noon. The MPs from the state also will be meeting him," said George.

What about Kerala HSR, Athirapally etc... mentioned in the same report? Arent they all state projects..? One thing in common is all these state projects including Vizhinjam needs "various" clearance (read political will) from centre due to Overseas Investment, environment, defence, shipping etc.. We all know how Vizhinjam bid got torpedoed in past because of Chinese firm involved and had to be retendered.. At the same time, we saw the same chinese firm complete the Hambanbatota port in SrilLanka which is now inaugarated and started operations..

And funnily, it seems now Centre has reversed its stand now & aggressively seeking chinese investment {http://www.smetimes.in/smetimes/news...ties72444.html } in Indian infrastructure....And so, where are we now on Vizhinjam...?

One thing for sure Vizhinjam doesnot seem to fare in the first five list of dream projects of Kerala Govt. as per the news report I posted...

Went to KFC and had to wait for more than one hour in Queue that too at from 09:00 PM. Good to see crowds flocking to KFC. Opening of KFC is a welcome change in TVM as MG Road previously had a deserted look after 08:30 PM as all major shops get closed at that time.

They are taking orders at 10:45 PM and people were still in queue .I Think they are open till 11:00 PM. (or 11:30 PM)?

Only issue in KFC is the person who is at the counter is also going to kitchen for collecting orders and serving it to customers so the queue is moving at a very slow pace and the space is limited .Hope these teething troubles be rectified soon .

Organic rice 'mela' in Thiruvananthapuram from Friday

Black is beautiful and in the case of rice, nutritious and packed with antioxidants too. Black rice, as one would imagine, is deep black in colour and mutates into a regal purple hue when cooked. The purple colour is due to the grain’s naturally high anthocyanin content, a trait most typically observed in fruits such as blueberries and blackberries.

The black rice, along with a thousand other varieties of rice, nutritious and even medicinal, has almost been wiped out of the country in the rush of high-yielding varieties. Here is a chance for you to take a peep at the rice biodiversity that the country once had. Thanal, along with Organic Bazaar, Save our Rice Campaign and the Asia-wide effort for Collective Rice Action (CORA) to Reclaim Our Rice and Biodiversity, will organise a three-day exhibition-cum-sale ‘mela’ for Organic Rice. The mela is to be held from July 6 to 8 at YMCA Hall at Statue Junction.

The fragrant ‘Gandhakasala’ from Wayanad, red rice varieties such as ‘Thondi’ and ‘Kuruva’, ‘Thavalakannan’ used in temples for preparing beaten rice flakes, ‘Njavara’ rice that is recommended for diabetics, ‘Mullankazhama’ - a lovely flower-like rice, the small grained brown rice called ‘Komal’, and varieties especially for lactating women will be on display.

These varieties, many of them grown in very small patches in Kerala, are being introduced to the consumers in Thiruvananthapuram by the Save our Rice Campaign, a national campaign to sustain rice. What is even more interesting is the fact that the native rice varieties are most resistant than the hybrid high-yielding ones.

‘’The Organic Rice Mela will also promote the consumption of red rice, which is a nutritious form of unpolished rice. The polished rice is known to be one of the reasons for the increasing incidence of diabetes and other related diseases. The mela will also offer consumers an option to book their year-long supply of organic red rice,’’ said S Usha, director of Thanal.

The mela will also launch the Kerala-leg of the ‘India for Safe Food Movement’ demanding that the Union Government should ban all the 67 hazardous pesticides that are used in India, but banned in other countries. This is a movement for change amongst Indian farmers, consumers and the government to ensure that all Indians have access to safe food, devoid of toxic substances.

“Now the general public are aware of the pesticides and have started growing their own vegetables. But there is a false belief that rice is relatively safe. The farmers growing organic rice need to be supported. We hope people will eat more organic rice so that the farmers will cultivate it more,’’ said Usha.

The organisers of the mela intend to request the State Government to implement the Organic Farming Policy in full earnest, so as to ensure the safety of farmers as well as consumers. They also demanded that the Government should take steps to promote indigenous varieties of paddy which are highly nutritious, stress-tolerant and with special qualities.

For more information, contact telephone numbers at 9447022775, or 9995358205 or the Thanal office at OD-3, Jawahar Nagar, Kowdiar, Thiruvananthapuram.
