Downtown Brownsville Texas - Letting It All Hang Out

Brownsville's DT; the most in your face border town on the Tex/Mex Border:

Starting with some older homes near DT:

Nice front yard:

And back yard:

Now the DT proper:

The abandoned El Jardin Hotel:

The shoppers from across:

The Market Square:

The guys above told us the Virgin Mary's image was on this tree. Do you see it?

The Old Post Office & Courthouse:

Now a discount clothing store:

Adios

really nice pictures. like the atmosphere - it's very lively in some pics, and very derelict in others.

well it ain't chicago, haha.

but for a small town its size it could be MORE suburban...also very old school and i'm susprised to see actually that it is not more abandoned. very interesting!

I echo this sentiment. The place may be a bit shabby but it looks to be fairly alive. It has a street life I'm sure many other cities in the Southwest U.S. would envy. In fact, I think that's true of most urban areas along the border. I especially like the fourth pic with the French Quarter-like architecture.

Really an interesting mix of looking like the US and Mexico. I'd love to see a photo thread about Matamoros for comparison.

Matamoros was my real target during this trip but I forgot my passport. You need a passport or birth certificate now, and I forgot about that.

Next time for sure.

Honestly, looks like a terrible place to live.

...and by the way, don't waste your time on border towns. There isn't anything you can see in the Mexican border towns that you can't see in the U.S. border towns.

If you're going to Mexico, go into the interior.

By the way, were most things done in Spanish there?

If you think Brownsville is shabby wait till you see Matamoros. It's a shanty town!!! Really "turd world".

Thank you for sharing those pics. But honestly, that is not a pretty city. It combines the worst of both countries and the result is evident.

No offense to Spanish speakers, but it makes me sick that the main language is Spanish in this town..

Well actually all along the U.S./Mexico border. I can understand a lot of Spanish and am learning, but this is the United States. Our language needs to be secured as English.

What about all of the other immigrants who come here and work so hard to learn English... now they're going to have to learn Spanish too? I support Obama on a lot of things, but not on having everyone learn Spanish.

people call this shitty? I wouldn't want to live there, but look at some of the housing and architecture and life in the town. Its no Paris but it isn't a Detroit, either (no offense Detroit, i still think you're an awesome city). Ive been to Much, Much worse towns and cities in the US. I kind of even like this town. Its got a lot of Potential, although i doubt it will ever live up to it. Still its not as bad as people are making it out to be imo (based on the photos)

Thanks for the tour RGV!

Oh wow! Very different opinions here... (from the Southeast Forum)
From what I've seen, many cities and towns in the United States have a little 'rundown' area in their Downtown, I don't know why some SSC users find Brownsville TX so shocking.
I've seen this image in Washington DC, Baltimore MD, Knoxville TN, Asheville NC, Colorado Springs CO, etc Basically everywhere Ive been to.
