Wow, these stadiums are looking fantastic. Pity I won't be going, but if England ever make it to the final, or even the semi's, i'm there.

absolutely not, especially to the US!
I just mean I couldn't possibly afford two trips. It will take me 18 months to get a super cheap holiday together for me and my youngest lad for a month or 6 weeks.. so I'll watch the world cup from Liverpool. Hopefully it will not be the same place from which I watched the tournament in 06! |

hey guys here two more taken today by ToxicBunny from the SA forum...
Going to be amazing walking from all the beachfront hotels along the promenade and beach to the stadium, will definately help not needing 1000s of buses to transport people and clogging up the streets...walk the beach, hit the waves and then the stadium...and yes even though its winter you will still be able to swim in the ocean (sea 20C) Quote:

‘Big lift’ underway in Cape Town ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() Tuesday 10 February 2009 ![]() ![]() ![]() Just a few hours ago an important milestone for Cape Town's Green Point stadium was reached as construction workers began the process of putting the stadium roof in place. Employing technology never before used on the African continent, the team plan to use radial cables to lift the structure into place. Referred to by the City as the ‘big lift' the process can be likened to the tightening of the spokes of a bicycle wheel. Seventy-two radial cables will connect the steel compression ring that is visible above the stadium to an inner tension ring around the pitch. As the cables are tightened slowly and almost simultaneously by 72 hydraulic jacks linked to the outer compression ring, the 600 ton inner ring will rise off the ground until it reaches its final position, 34.5m above the pitch. Set to be one of the most scenic stadiums in South Africa, and with the world-renowned Table Mountain as its backdrop, Green Point stadium is well on its way to completion. Director of Communications for the Cape Town 2010 team, Pieter Cronje, stressed that this important milestone means a lot to the people of Cape Town. "Seeing the stadium structure and the work going on there gives people a sense of reality and a sense of excitement about 2010," Cronje said. The next phase of roof construction is the installation of the steel trusses, to be followed by the placement of 16mm thick glass panels and a fabric membrane underneath. The glass roof will cover the stands but not the pitch, giving a sense of light and upliftment to the massive 68,000-seater stadium. Work on the stadium is on schedule for completion by 14 December 2009, when it will be officially handed over by the contractors to the City of Cape Town. Interesting facts and figures on the roof: Steel compression ring: 800m long 72 hollow sections Each section 2.2m wide and 1.2m high Total weight 1,140 tons Radial cables and tension ring: 85-98mm diameter Total weight 370 tons Total length 7,400m Total roof weight: Approximately 4,500 tons |

Festival of lights at Moses Mabhida Stadium in Durban
Monday, 16 February 2009 ![]() The City of Durban experienced a festival of lights on Valentines Day as fireworks decorated the night sky in celebration of the completion of the signature arch of the Moses Mabhida Stadium. The celebrations, which were attended by City dignitaries as well as LOC officials, saw the lights of the stadium and the arch being switched on for the first time. Addressing guests, KZN premier Sibusiso Ndebele said that the milestone signified South Africa's and indeed Durban's readiness to host the 2010 FIFA World Cup, adding that the event should be seen as a celebration of unity. "[Tonight] is a celebration of teams working together to create not only an architectural and engineering masterpiece, but to physically create an icon, that symbolizes and spans years of history, years of hope and years of work - to let all South Africans feel the pulse of unification," he said. The arch will provide critical support for the stadium roof, reports Engineering News. The roof will have a surface area of 46 000 m2 and will be suspended from the arch by steel cables and secured around the perimeter of the stadium by a compression ring. The cost of the roof and arch is R448-million. The stadium is now more than 60% complete with the final completion date set for October 30th 2009. Once complete, the stadium is expected to provide a world-class venue for sport events in South Africa. The three-tiered stadium will have a gross seating capacity of 70 000. It will also form part of Durban's King Park sporting precinct which will accommodate a variety of sporting disciplines including athletics, rugby, golf and swimming. The stadium is named after struggle stalwart Moses MnCane Mabhida. He was one of the founding members of the South African Congress of Trade Unions (SACTU) and was elected a vice-president at its first congress in 1955. He also served as a commander in the MK before serving as General Secretary of the Communist Party. He died of a heart attack in 1986 while working in Maputo. His body was embalmed and transported to South Africa in 2006, where he was buried at the Slangspruit Heroes Acre in his birthplace of KwaZulu Natal. http://www.sagoodnews.co.za/countdow...a_stadium.html
