Baliem Valley - Papua
Once you read or give it a deeper study to Danis way of life, dont be surprise that you may find your eye lifting or forehead wrinkling. Why? Because the Dani is uniquely amazing. The Dani men and women sleep separately in different honai (Danis traditional house). The men sleep grouped in one honai, while the women and children slumber in another honai. As descended from their ancestor, sex is taboo for the women after giving birth, for 2 or 5 years, as the result the Dani generated healthier kids since the women focus on babysitting the kids during the most important phase of growth. This situation makes the men vulnerable to polygamy, its a true fact of life that the Dani men are allowed to have more than 1 wife or as many as he can afford. A man should give 4-5 pigs to the girls parent he wants to marry. For Dani men, his social status are initiated by the number of wives and pigs he has. ![]() Another remarkable custom of Dani is that women will amputate their finger when their relatives die, hence doesnt be surprise when you see women with missing finger. To enhance the quality of your experience in Baliem Valley, guide is essential since there are no clear maps or signage initiated for visitor. The guide will help to lead the track, communicate with the local people and in advance, the guide will inform the tourist about local dos and donts. ![]() Flying might be the only way to access the Baliem Valley through Wamena. Here are some alternatives on carrier from Jayapura to Wamena: (For further info, ask the officers at Sentani Airport Information Center). * Trigana Air Services provide daily flights into and out of Wamena. Spot the Trigana Air Service Offices at Sentani Airport terminal and Wamena Airport terminal. * MAF * AMA * Yajasi * Manunggal Air * Hercules carrier provide by Indonesian army (TNI) To access Baliem Valley, you can rent car or public bus from Wamena. For those who are adventurer and cultural observer in heart, stay and mingle with the Baliem Valley people is possible, just make sure your guide booked it before your visit. Go Show? Affordable. ![]() If the first alternative is way too extreme, you can stay at hotels at Wamena: * Wamena Hotel at Jl. Homhom 61 * Srikandi Hotel at Jl. Irian 16 * Pondok Wisata Putri Dani at Jl. Irian 40 * Nayak Hotel at Jl. Gatot Subroto 63 * Hotel Syah Rial Makmur at Jl. Gatot Subroto 45 * Hotel Anggrek at Jalan Ambon 1 * Baliem Pilamo Hotel at Jalan Trikora * Baliem Valley Resort (3 star resort), www.baliem-valley-resort.de Would you mind if we say ON FOOT? Healthy foot and fit body? Absolutely. Through trekking, you can witness traditional ceremonies, traditional markets and the people of Dani. There is no restaurant inside the Baliem- Valley, a guide could bargain the Dani people to provide simple meals. Its stoutly advised, that the visitor bring their own meals and snack during the trekking. Meals and snacks can be found in grocery store at Wamena * Souvenir can be easily found on the valley and buy the crafts directly from the Dani people. * Stone blade is a major favorite for the tourist * Sekan: rattan bracelate * Noken: made from trees bark * Head and arm necklace * Jogal: grass skirt * And other head decorations * The captivating Baliem Fiesta is held on August around 10 - 17 August every year. The festival performs traditional dances, pig races, ancestral fighting and races. Today, Baliem Fiesta is one of the main reasons why tourists visit Papua. Its a magical Fiesta says most of the tourist. * Join the large and busy local market at Sinatma. * Spotting mummies at Kurulu Village. * Guide is needed to explore the valley * Dont forget to bring the copy of your Surat Keterangan Jalan * Best time to visit is between March and August * If you travel during the rainy season, be prepared with cold weather equipment * Ask your guide about Dos and Donts in the Baliem Valley ![]() Foreigner must obtain a travel permit letter or known as Surat Keterangan Jalan to get the access into the interior part of Papua. You can obtain the Surat Keterangan Jalan at main town police station such as Jayapura, Merauka, Timika, Biak, Nabire, Monokwari and other main city. The permit of lasts will depend on your request, from 1 week until 1 month or even longer. Please prepare copies of your passport, recent photograph and list of places you wish to visit. Its easy to get the Surat Keterangan Jalan, because the officers are friendly and helpful.

Foreigners patent hundreds of Bali jewelry designs
Irawaty Wardany , The Jakarta Post , Denpasar | Mon, 07/07/2008 10:31 AM | Bali Balinese jewelry artisans lamented the fact that foreign entrepreneurs had copyrighted hundreds of the country's and the island's traditional jewelry designs, thus, placing the rightful heirs of those designs in a weak legal position. "There have been some cases in which our artisans faced legal suits because they made jewelry based on traditional motifs and designs which apparently had been patented by foreign businessmen," head of Silver Jewelry Artisans Association, Nyoman Patra, said Saturday in Denpasar. One of the cases involved John Hardy, an American businessman, and his former employee, Ketut Deni Aryasa. Hardy took Aryasa to court accusing him of stealing his design. Hardy accused Aryasa of copying the Batu Kali Kombinasi motif. The motif, according to Patra, was based on a traditional Balinese motif. "We are really concerned about this situation, which is why we have been trying to find out more about which motifs and designs have been patented by foreigners," he said. The association found that there were around 600 motifs and designs, all based on Indonesia's traditional arts, that have been registered by Hardy as his copyrights. "And there are 1,200 more designs that are still in the process of copyright certification," he added. The registered motifs include the Palu motif that the Balinese used to apply on their bokor (brass bowls); Jawan Keplak silver jewelry motif that has been known for hundreds of years in Celuk, Gianyar; the Tulang Naga motif from Pulo village in Lumajang, East Java; Batik Kawung motif that is mostly used by batik makers in Yogyakarta and Surakarta; and the Dayak motif from Kalimantan. The copyrights for all those motifs have been registered in both Indonesia and the United States. "That is why we are gathering representatives from artisans and designers in Bali today to talk about this situation because the action of these foreign businessmen has limited our space of creation," he said. I Kadek Sosiawan, an interior designer, said Balinese artisans had not copyrighted the motifs and designs because they considered them the collective heritage of the Balinese people. "Those motifs and designs were created by our ancestors and have been used for hundreds of years," he said. He added that Indonesians, especially Balinese, could not let one group or one person take control of the values that have been passed down from generation to generation on the island. He suggested all artisan associations form a united front to protect Indonesia's cultural heritage. Gde Sumarjaya Linggih, a Balinese legislator with the Commission IV at the House of Representatives in Jakarta, said he would assist the artisans and designers in bringing their concerns to the central government. "This kind of problem will appear again in the future because most of our traditional motifs and designs were created a long time ago while intellectual property rights are only recently being introduced to our country," he said. He added that Indonesian people did not pay sufficient attention to administrative procedures like intellectual property rights. "Most of us only focus on working and creating, ignoring the important administrative matters pertaining to the creations," he said. Such negligence has opened opportunities for foreigners who are more educated in these issues to take advantage of the country's cultural heritage, he said. "We really need to make a list of our cultural heritage and register their copyrights soon to prevent similar cases from happening in the future," he said. Nyoman Patra expected artists and designers from other regions in the country to join the Balinese artisans to cooperate with each other in finding a solution to the problem.

Indonesia safe for foreign tourists, US envoy says
Nusa Dua (ANTARA News) - Indonesia is now safe for foreign visitors, US ambassador to Indonesia Cameron Hume said here on Wednesday. "We believe the threat of terrorism in Indonesia has in the past few years been reduced and the country is now safe," the US envoy said. He said the improved security condition in Indonesia had been reported to the American people, and the US government itself had lifted its travel warning on Indonesia. "But the arrest of several terror suspects in Palembang, South Sumatra, recently proves the threat of terrorism still exists in Indonesia," he said. Hume said the police`s ability in breaking up the terror network in Palembang had earned the Indonesian police a positive assessment.

RI must still work hard to attract seven million tourists
By Andi Abdussalam Jakarta (ANTARA News) - Indonesia which in January addressed an invitation to people around the world by proclaiming 2008 as "Visit-Indonesia Year" still has to work hard to achieve its target of attracting seven million foreign tourists this year. On several occasions, Culture and Tourism Minister Jedro Wacik expressed his optimism that the target of seven million of foreign tourist arrivals would be achieved. Yet, on Monday, he spoke in a `pessimistic tone` when he said Indonesia hoped to be visited by about 6.3 to 6.4 million foreign tourists by the end of the year. The minister mentioned the 6.3-64 million figures based on his estimate that until the second half of 2008, only 3.1 million foreign tourists had arrived in the country. "I estimate that there were about 3.1 million foreign tourist arrivals in the first semester of 2008. Central Bureau of Statistics (BPS) data showed an increase in foreign tourist arrivals by 14 percent per month. So, it is expected that foreign tourist arrivals in Indonesia will reach 6.3-64 million at the end of the year," the minister said here on Monday. The figures mentioned by the minister is lower than the target of seven million. BPS said earlier that the number of foreign tourist arrivals in Indonesia in May 2008 stood at 509,000, or an increase by about 10.85 percent compared with a month earlier when the figure was 459.130 Thus, Indonesia needs to make extra efforts to promote its tourism in order to achieve its target. The minister, however, believed that with hard work, the target could be achieved. Speaking at the opening of a "Sumatra International Travel Fair" (SITF) and congress of the South East Tour Guide Association (SEATGA) in West Sumatra recently the minister expressed optimism that the target of the Visit Indonesia Year (VIY ) 2008 program to attract seven million foreign tourists will be achieved. "In January, February, March and April this year, the number of foreign tourists increased by an average of 15 percent compared with the figures in the same months last year," he said. He said he was optimistic as the number of tourist arrivals in the January-March period this year represented an increase of 15 percent from the figure on the same period last year. If the 15-percent increase also happened for every remaining month in 2008, the number of tourist arrivals for the whole year would be 6.5 million. "The balance of 400,000 tourist arrivals is expected to be covered by the many conventions, that have already taken place, are still underway or will be held in Indonesia," he said. "Therefore, we all have to be optimistic the target of seven million tourist arrivals will be reached so that we will not have hoped and worked in vain," he said. Besides, the current conditions in the country remain conducive for visitors, despite rallies here and there. The number of foreign tourists visiting Indonesia was not affected by the widespread demonstrations against the fuel oil price hikes nor by the increasing political temperature ahead of the 2009 general elections. "Foreigners are now even saying Indonesia is an interesting country," the minister said. The current situation must be maintained so that conditions in Indonesia remained conducive for the Visit Indonesia Year 2008. After all, the terrorism issue which disturbed the country in the past several years has also died out. Owing to the relatively stable security conditions in Indonesia, the United States has lifted its travel warning on Indonesia. Presidential Spokesman Dino Pati Djalal said that the lifting of a US travel warning on Indonesia is expected to help increase the number of US tourist arrivals in the country in 2008. "The lifting of the travel warning recently is something we have been awaiting for a long time," Dino Pati Djalal said in response to the lifting of the US travel warning that had been in force since 2000. He said before the US government officially revoked the travel warning, its embassy in Jakarta had notified the Indonesian government on Washington`s plan to lift it. A number of US prominent figures had visited Indonesia such as Bill Gates and director of computer processor Intel Corporation Craig R Barret. At the end of 2007 in Bali, Indonesia also successfully hosted the UN Convention on Climate Change which was attended by a number of heads of state and prominent figures from various parts of the world. "The whole world now knows that Indonesia is secure. As for the threat of terrorist activity, it can happen anywhere," Djalal said. According to H. Sarbini, chairman of the Tourist Friendship Forum (Fosipa), the United States` decision to lift its travel warning to its citizens to visit Indonesia, provides a big opportunity for tourism authorities in the country to resume luring American and European tourists to come to Indonesia. "The United States is a symbol of the world`s community. Thus, if Americans are now free to go to Indonesia, Europeans will automatically be encouraged to follow suit. The lifting of the travel warning will also provide an opportunity and will psychologically restore the confidence of Indonesian tourism authorities," he said. (*)
