Celebration CHINA - Welcoming the Olympics #1

With the Summer Olympics around the corner, I've decided to create this compilation of my photos from China to welcome you all to the Middle Kingdom as we celebrate the 1st Olympic Games in China.

1. These traditional scripts are not widely used in the mainland anymore, but they are still common in Hong Kong, Macau, and Taiwan.

2. Beijing is full of history, and nowhere is more visible than inside the Forbidden City.

3. This door was restored a bit too well, but at least it still has some Manchu writing on it. The Manchu foreign tribe formed the last ruling dynasty in imperial China.

4. Changing gears, Shanghai is quite a skyscraper fan's paradise ...

5. ... where you'll find some nice surprises.

6. Yet at times it's also at a more humane scale.

7. Qingdao will host the sailing events as it is right by the coast.

9. Change is in the air .. the enclave of Macau is now hosting lots of curious mainland tourists, flush with cash in an emerging middle class.

10. Shenzhen will be the ultimate testament to change ... rising from rice paddies as a capitalist experiment.

11. Yet China is not all about cities. There are many natural attractions well worth a visit.

12. How about a quiet day fishing, traditional style?

13. Or a cruise down a quiet river?

14. Bull or bear market?

15. Ironic this picture is now very out-dated even though it is a year and a half old.

16. Where old meets the new.

17. Where the old is still very visible.

18. Can you afford one of these units?

19. Probably if you can work in one of these skyscrapers.

20. Best is to spot skyscrapers instead.

22. Did you know the Olympic equestrian events will be held in Hong Kong?

23. Modern airports seem fairly common throughout China these days. I haven't been to the new terminal in Beijing yet, but here's Pudong.

24. Yet many places still have a lot of history for your appreciation.

25. Welcome to the new China.

This will be my second time to China. I'm only there for three weeks, so it's the right amount of time.
