Wow, that looks a bit sparse compared to now.

This one looks quite recent, but I think the second (purple) line connecting to Hongqiao is finished now.

What is the meaning of "metro under construction for 2012"? Does it mean 120 km of metro was supposed to open in 2012 or in that year 120 km was work in progress?

That map is out of date. There are 99 Kms to be opened in 2013 and more kms being constructed now.

It's pretty hard finding an up-to-date map as it changes every few months.

Do you have one? I just googled "Shanghai Metro Map 2013" and that one seemed best as it showed proposed lines. Anyway, I was just trying to demonstrate how far Shanghai has come.

I didn't know the High Speed CRH line 22 only had 6 stations. Interesting. Is Minsheng Development Zone the same as Jinshanwei?

That map is a bit off-base. I'm pretty sure Line 22 runs northeast to Shanghai South Station after Xinzhuang, and the u/c line to the northwest to Hongqiao is the future extension of existing Line 5. Line 22 has nine stations.

Pretty sure Minhang (not Minsheng) Devo Zone is the terminus of Line 5. Line 22 does not serve that station:

Line 22 has 9 stations but only 8 of them opened, Xinzhuang Station is U/C. Minhang Dev Zone is located near the city of Shanghai while Jishanwei is 56km away down to the Hangzhou Bay (sea). Here some facts of Line 22 (Jinshan Railway).
  • Line 22 is a commuter rail so its length and ridership do not count to Shanghai metro's data;
  • Entering 2013 Line 22 is getting very crowded esp. in rush hours; Increasing trains frequency is requested by riders;
  • P+R (Parking and ride) parking lot opens at Jinshanwei Station on April 1st;
  • The price may rise with the removal of MOR (Line 22 is a rail line); The current price ($1.5) is very low compared to cost;

And Line 16 was marked as Line 21 by mistake on that map.

Wiki's Shanghai subway map is up to date. For U/C and planned lines, metrofans map looks accurate.

By the way, it is a bit different from what runs in line 7 & 9: the view from the cab is much wider because the central part is also clear.

However, I still wonder why they don't increase the number of cars per train for lines that will eventually run through the core of the mega city. In my opinion, on such lines as 9, 3/4, 10, three have to be 8-car trains up to 190 m long. Just like those on line 1 & 2.

line 9 and 10 are doing okay now. But line 3/4 need serious capacity upgrade. A line splitting project was initiated to separate the shared part of Line 3 and 4 to increase frequencies. Increasing car number is another solution but it will need infrastructure construction on all stations.
