Yet the gird isn't dense at all both line and station wise. In most areas you have to walk more than 400m to reach the closest metro station.

It would help if they didn't insist on putting insane stop spacings in the downtown.

400 meters sounds like an incredibly long distance to walk.

For many many times I have to walk 400m to transfer from Line 1 to Line 2 (or vice versa) at People Square.

Yup. The transfer at Peoples Square is really too long.

It's weird lines 7 and 10 don't have an interchange. Also lines 4 and 8 on the north side.

I think it makes sense given the huge area of Shanghai.

I count there will be 13 interchanges on Line 12 with almost all the other lines.

If the stations are too close to each other to make a transfer station between them, they should really build some sort of conection pedestrian tunnel. It's really weird that the lines cross but are not conected. I dont get the point for that.

Line 11 is the only one I haven't ridden so far... Because I didn't find how to transfer.

By the way, soon Shanghai metro will probably boast about having the largest number of rolling stock types.

For such big cities as Shanghai it's quite ok. More frequent stations would make it so long to travel. If you look at new extensions of the metro systems around the world, you'll probably notice that they all tend to increase distances. Even in systems where historically distances used to be rather short.

As for transfer distances you just take the example of Paris: it has got very short distances within lines - sometimes you can see 2 stations looming in the tunnel, but transfers may be longer, up to 500 metres.

This network map is very useful to improve transportation process in shanghai transport. If you want to improve the travel system of shanghai, then arrange better travel resources and also promote well-experienced designers or architectures for construction of roads and their maps.

http://www.shmetro.com/node132/201203/con111309.htm

Interesting PSA article posted last year from the shanghai metro on crowd control measures, rational and desired effects. It also tells us capacity percentages (probably peak section of line) on lines that are over or near capacity.

Line 1 - 94.7%
Line 3 - 106%
Line 5 - 109%
Line 6 - 133%
Line 7 - 101%
Line 8 - 102.7%
Line 9 - 89.7%

I could imagine the numbers have gotten worse today as ridership matures. There are the normal fan favorites like Line 6 and 8 but its also strange that Line 2 and 4 are not included, aren't they over capacity too? Is Line 5 really over capacity? Sure it also uses C size trains but the area it serves doesn't look too busy or dense, relatively speaking of course.
