Songjiang is the South-West part if Greater Shanghai. Metro line 9 comes there.

Has the construction of that Songjiang tram started? If yes, when it is scheduled to open for public?

Good map but it's not the latest. Line 12 Qufu Rd has opened which is not on the map; And Maglev line is missing from the map.

Sharp eye big-dog, thanks for the heads up. We added newly opened route to Qufu Rd and fixed bug with missing Maglev line, so here is latest updated English/Chinese version:

English and Chinese versions only are available at:

You don't really need to add the Maglev. Its a total white elephant, I usually avoid taking it.

The Maglev in its current form is useless.
If you take the Maglev from the airport, you need to exit at Longyang Nowhere Road and then squeeze into Line 2 to get into the centre. Good luck doing that between 4pm and 7.30pm!

What is the most current medium term (say around 2018-2020) plan for Shanghai metro?

Wrong. Line 2 is not that stuffed to squeeze in the train. And then you've got line 7, too.

I love taking it. The fastest way to get to the city.

I love it too, especially because I live in Pudong, not far from Maglev station. I avoid taking Line 2 from airport whenever possible. It's too slow to get to even Pudong (lujiazui or Century Park).

I take the Maglev every time. Its still the fastest option... even with the line transfer. If they could somehow extend it to at Century Avenue, that would put it on top of 4 metro lines. Even better, they could extend it to Peoples square or Lujiazui!

But seriously, its current location is quite out of the way.

The Maglev would be a runaway success if they extended it to Lujiazui, People's Square, one or two stations more and then Hongqiao. Even at their higher-than-metro prices.

"Just" bore two deep tunnels. It would need very few stations.

They need to do it now while the economy is still growing hard and costs are still somewhat low. But the time maglev technology is cheaper, which is what they are waiting for, construction costs will be so high they no longer will be able to pull it off. They will probably then build some weak alternative around the city to Hongqiao, missing all the parts that really need an express connection.

Two airports connected with maglev will be amazing.

I think it will happen eventually.

I believe it was planned to do so... via Expo Park and South Railway Station. And even all the way to... Hangzhou! . But it would be better to route it via Lujiazui, People's Square, maybe Zhongshan Park and finally Hongqiao. I would then number it as line 2 express, as it would parallel current line 2.

By the way, I'm also planning to do a map, with all the names in Hanyu Pinyin . This will happen as soon as I finish naming all stations of a fictional metro that is basically the same layout as Shanghai (And I hope to do so tomorrow CEST/later today Chinese time).
