I noticed that only line 16 uses third rails instead of overhead wires. Why? Will new lines also use third rails or will line 16 be an exception?

They wanted to reduce the visual impact of the mostly elevated line. Line 17 which is also mostly elevated will use 3rd rail too. But other lines such as Line 14,15 and 18 which are underground will use overhead lines.

I updated my Shanghai map with a much more strict orthogonal grid in the central area and better topology on the periphery

The new 3/4 line train looks neat. Yet it's now more complicated to see whether it is a line 3 or line 4 train. Before it used to be way easier.

Work on new Metro Line 14 stations to start
Shanghai Daily Excerpt
November 16, 2016

CONSTRUCTION on eight stations across downtown Shanghai along the planned Metro Line 14 will start over the next few months from this Friday, weighing down on congestion, police said yesterday.

Police announced new traffic arrangements around the stations and said they will keep working to relieve traffic pressure on the city center in the next four years during the construction.

The eight stations in Putuo, Jing’an and Huangpu districts and the Pudong New Area are located near popular tourist sites such as the Jing’an Temple, Huaihai Road, People’s Square, Yuyuan Garden and Lujiazui.

Construction of the Wuning Road and Jing’an Temple stations will start this Friday, and will begin on the adjacent Dongxin Road and Wuding Road stations next Friday.

Finally some new lines within the city centre. Shanghai needs more of these.

The last metro line through downtown Shanghai, once line 14 is completed, then the metro framework in downtown Shanghai is complete.

Unless they separate line 3 and push it through downtown

IIRC the original plan for line 4 (not line 3) was Yishan Lu-Hongqiao Lu-Jiangsu Lu-Wuning Lu-Zhongtan Lu-Zhongshan Beilu-Baoshan Lu. I wonder why they changed it to run together with line 3, thus limiting capacity on both lines.

Anyway, line 14 won't be the last line through downtown Shanghai, as line 19 is planned to run just East of Lujiazui (the Chongming line has been changed to commuter rail instead). And line 25 is proposed to run from Xujiahui (as it was line 23, but they changed its start to Shanghai Tiyuchang).

Like other cities, Shanghai has published a new short-term plan (Up to 2025). Apart from the lines currently U/C, the following lines are now in the planning board:
1. Line 19, Meilong to Yangxing, ~40 km, 30+ stations.
2. 1st phase of line 20, West station to Gongqing Senlin Gongyuan, ~20 km, 10+ stations.
3. 1st phase of line 21, Guoji Lvyou Dujia Qu to Gaohang, ~28 km, 10+ stations (might be 20 as well).
4. 1st phase of line 23, Xujiahui to Minhang Kaifa Qu (actually only to Dongchuan Lu as it will take over current line 5, also they have restored it to Xujiahui), ~29 km, 20+ stations.
5. Line 1 West extension (Actually South, as line 1 runs mainly North-South), Xinzhuang to Humin Lu, ~1 km, 1 station.
6. Line 13 West extension, Jinyun Lu to Zhongguo Bolanhui Bei, ~10 km, 5 stations.
7. Jiading-Minhang line, Jiading Xincheng to Xinzhuang (combining parts of former lines 17 and 22), ~42 km, 10+ stations. I think this line should run to Jiading Bei, and line 11 run to Huaqiao only.
8. Airport line, East Station (to be built besides Pudong airport) to Hongqiao station, ~68 km, 8 stations. It will take a different route to that of old maglev plans.
9. Chongming line (former line 19), Jinqiao to Chenjia town, ~47 km, 8 stations.
