This could probably be the biggest metro expansion the world has ever seen.

Yes, that's right. I'm doing what a lot of foreigners do here - teaching. I've been here since August. I'm originally from Calgary, Canada.

It's a metro by American definitions of distance. Most of the lines are crammed into a 5-mile radius, and the furthest spokes aren't that far out compared to Metra or NYC's commuter rail lines. True long-distance commuting is in its infant stages right now, e.g. people riding HSR from Suzhou into town.

What about the lines that extend to Chongming, Fengxian, Nanhui, Jinshan, and Qingpu? Surely that constitutes long-distance commute right?

Aside from lack of four-track express service, I have to say Shanghai metro is looking really great. It is only plans up to 2020 right? Would it be safe to say that in 2040, the rail transportation will be even greater, maybe with the addition of true commuter lines and light rail to supplement the 2020 system? A number of things that come to mind for a post 2020 additions include maybe a Chongming railroad commuter service, legit commuter rails radiating from any one of the three railway stations, a Lujiazui monorail/people-mover, and adding express lines next to really long completed lines like Line 1, 2, or 3.

Shanghai should add at least one railway station in Pudong.

Dont they plan a generel renovation of the whole area including the station itself?

Now, after Shanghai South Station is done and Hongqiao Railway Station is under construction, I can`t imagine that they leave it like this...

Shanghai Railway Station isn't in People's Square - it's two stops north of there along Metro Line 1.

I've only travelled from Shanghai Railway Station once, and I do admit it's not a very pleasant experience. I hope they fix it up the way they fixed up Shanghai South Railway Station.

Pudong has more people than Hamburg (1,7 mio) and Hamburg has five long distance railway stations. I do know the problems with migrant workers messing up the places, but they are still human and it won't help much by just giving them a condescending look. Education and economic emancipation is the key to improve China in the long run.

You and your arrogant Shanghairen attitude somestimes makes me puke.

I am pretty Shanghai was also full of rude and mannerless people when Shanghai was underdeveloped and poor, but now as Shanghai gets richer, the people become more socially aware, better education.

Kix attitude is just natural human nature, rich, civilized people look down on the poor. No need to puke

@YelloPerilo hmm i believe im not the only one, once you have experienced with them eating/spitting/loudly talking/littering/begigng for money (fake) in subway or subway stations, you will feel how i feel towards them.

also i have to admit i was being a bit sterotypical, i shouldn't say coutnry people in general, some of them are very friendly and nice.

the ironic thing is taht shagnhai cant survive without the country people, they does all the workings in shanghai, they built swfc, jinmao and most of the buildings, they do the jobs taht nobody likes for a low payment. that's what made shanghai boom during the past years, cheap construction costs, have to thank them too :p
