Maastricht and more (Holland)

Holland (the Netherlands) is a small country in Europe. Here I post pictures of the most southly province, called Limburg. You can expect pictures of cities, landscapes and heavy industry.

1.

The mine ‘Maurits’ closed decades ago and at this site a huge chemical plant were built. Now the multinationals DSM and Sabic are located here.

2.

Contrast, 20 kilometers (13 miles) to the south the landscape looks like this.

MAASTRICHT (capital of the province/ 120.000 inhabitans)

3.

The City-center, the building in the front is the city-hall.

4.

Social housing estate in a suburb.

5.

Not high, but the Colonel is the highest office of Maastricht.

6.

Maastricht is one of the oldest cities of the Netherlands.
--------------------------------------------------------------------------

7.

More than the half of Holland lies beneath the sea-level. Limburg is (one) of the exceptions. Maybe 95% of Holland is flat, but this area in Limburg has (small) hills.

8.

9.

Heerlen and urban area (95.000 inhabitans/ incl. urban area 220.000 inhabitans)

10.

Just 100 years ago this was countryside. Because of the mines new cities developed. The mines closed 30 years ago and even now this is the poorest region of Holland. This is just a boring housing estate.

12.

“Border’ between the countryside and the urban area.
--------------------------------------------------------------------------

13.

14.

The same industry you saw on picture 1.

15.

Eys, a little village .

Sittard (40.000 inhabitans/ my hometown!)

16.

The major square of the city.

17.

The very modest skyline, the highest buildings are old church towers. The highest flats are 40 m. high (or must I say low…)

18.

European head-office of the multinationa Sabic.

19.

20.

Sittard is one the of many old cities in Holland.

21.

This ‘vakwerkhuis’you see the most in Germany. But in this part in Holland there are also ‘vakwerkhuizen’. This house in Sittard is almost 500 years old and one of the oldest buildings in town.

22.

Fielsd, little hills and a suburb of Sittard. Germany lies a less than 1 kilometer to the left, Belgium lies 7 kilometrs to the right. This is the smallest part of Holland.

23.

23.

Geleen (35.000 inhabitans/ 1 km south of Sittard/ many industry (see pic 1 + 14))

24.

25.

26.

Older houses and in the background heavy industry.

27.

28.

29.

Beek, a village between Sittard and Maastricht. Look at the plane that going to land at Maastricht Aachen Airport.

30.

Heiniken – beer is maybe the biggest expot product of Holland, but the beer of small breweries are often better. Here the brewery of Brand bier.

Maastricht, part 2

31.

32.

Old factories near the city-center. Now Maastricht is more an office city and quite international. In Maastricht the European Goverments signed yes for the Euro.

33.

34.

35.

The River the Maas, if you folowing this River for 200 kilometer you ended up in the skyscraper-capital of Holland, Rotterdam.

36.

37.

38.

For the last time the industry near Geleen, the only real big (heavy) industry of Limburg.

39.

At the front Holland, the church in the background is Belgium.

The pictures are taken in a region from approm. 600 km2, just 1,5% of the total area of Holland. The pics were taken between 2005 and 2008 with 2 different camera’s, with sometimes a quite moderate quality. I hope you enjoyed!
