well, they scrapped the SOM design and went for Handel's instead and besides, there was the 2008 financial crisis. it's just normal to postpone projects when market sentiments don't call for it.

Handel Architecture, no relation to the composer, has designed the new luxury hotel and residential skyscraper for the luxurious Shangri-la hotel brand in Manila, the Filipino capital.

With 61 storeys and an eventual height of 250 metres, the project will host approximately 130,000 square metres of internal floor space. This will be divided between 577 hotel rooms, 97 serviced apartments run by the hotel, and a further 96 private apartments dubbed "Horizon Homes". It will be called Shangri-la At The Fort after its location in the city.

There will also be all the functions one expects from a luxury hotel including a grand ballroom, fourteen function rooms, a board room, business centre, and teleconferencing facilities. To provide the residents with more to do than just work or hold conferences, there will also be full sports facilities including a swimming pool, sports hall, indoor tennis courts and even a basketball court.

As if this isn't enough the private apartments will also have additional exclusive amenities for their use. These will include a gym, outdoor pool, and residents lounge. The children of the rich will also have their own play area.

Handel Architects have replaced Skidmore Owings and Merrill since the previous proposals were floated back in 2008. The new and more pared down design perhaps reflects the financial realities of a changed world that saw the largest financial crisis in sixty years.

This time round though, what has been proposed is likely what will be as initial construction began in the autumn of 2011 with the project due to be completed in 2014.
