Do you have any idea whether any gold class screen is coming at luxe @ phoenix market city since they had mentioned in market city website that there are 2 gold class screens coming?

Visited Citi Center and EA over the weekend.

The food court in both the malls remainded me of Saravana Bhavan non A/C - people waiting by your table to occupy it as soon as you vacate. The play areas was crowded to the point that I could not enjoy it one bit. It was like ranganathan street. Escape was also very crowded.

One thing I noticed is the Shop levels were pretty empty. Chennaites are really starved for entertainment. Investors should just open malls (for lack of a better term) containg vast food courts, arcade areas and theaters and lean down or totally cut out the space wasted for shops. These would do rearing business.

Was really put off by the qualify of the construction finish in EA. There seems to be contruction going on in EA. Anyone know what it is?

very true. If one just does a SWOT analysis or market survey, Chennai does not want many multi-brand showrooms and huge names selling for a few thousands of rupees on aparels and outfit. They would just buy something from T Nagar for a fraction of these prices and just cover themselves up for the occasion. Neat presentation thats all rather than some costly show off stuff. But the niche market for those shopoholic rich politician's daughters who would only want a Prada or Gucci handbag costing a few 10's of thousands are unprecidented and can happen anytime or might not happen at all, all day. Dont count on them. Go by the large numbers and survey your market.

Most folks here are foodies. They would try pastas, pizzas, speghettis or Brazilian health drinks like Acai berries or cranberry or Chinese or Thai or whatever food outlet that they come across. Not to forget our own Murugan idly kadai kind of shops. Second thing is window shopping is at a big time percentage in these parts of the country. They'd have money but are stingy or procrastinate by saying we will see next time.

A jewelry shop also might work well in those areas. It is all geographical driven demographics and consumer behavior and patterns of purchase.

on VG sir post,
I agree on most of your posts. Here in u.s too, most of the big malls, there are lot of window shoppers only.
people's love for brands are getting increased in the last 10 years. while non-garments may not do well, garment brands are doing well.
I agree with your words on food...
Veetule veg salad panrathai vittuttu, 15 km poi Subway-le veggie delight sapiduvanga..

This is not the scene in Chennai only. I have waited for over 20 mins to get a seat in the food court of Inorbit and Oberoi mall in Mumbai (two of the biggest malls in the city). It is just that the patronage is skewed and the footfalls during weekends are much higher.

Good point. I have always wondered why no mall developer has ever thought about this. A multiplex with 15+ screens, two floors of food court, one floor with fine dining restaurants and a gaming arcade, one floor with retail shops.

it's due to the long distance to travel from chennai... another -ve is one has to pay toll fee too... if it was inside chennai somewhere (like besant nagar) some where it could have given sathyam tough fight...

I checked out the 5D vision theatre next to ESCAPE for a 12 minute movie with my kids. Enjoyed the experience. The kids loved it but they charge 150 bucks for 12 minutes and that was the only downer.

Good to see T Nagar being mentioned in global newsletters. Infact I am seeing a lot of Chennai based articles cited in gold newsletters of late. The streets of T Nagar are a very good barometer for predicting the physical demand for gold in India.
Another one
