National Museum expansion 中国国家博物馆扩建

The project started on Mar 17 2007, will be finished by the end of 2009 and open in 2010. It'll be the world's largest museum building (192,000 sq.m.) after the expansion.

Right now it looks similar to the Great Hall of the People, but then this will bring a nice touch of modernity to Tiananmen with the glass cubes, along with the Beijing Theatre already completed!

I wished they would have demolished this building and build something like the Tian'anmen rostrum with a modern twist.

@ big-dog

I don't get it. If the Great Hall of the People will be occupied by this museum, where will the offices of the Communist Party of China be moving?

They will rent some space in Tian'anmen sqaure McDonald's.

The national museum is located on the opposite side of the Tian'anmen square. Around Tian'anmen square,

East side: National Museum;
West side: Great Hall of the People and National Grand Theater;
North side: Tian'anmen and Forbidden City
South side: Qian Men pedestrian street

it's said this is the final design. It's more consistent with the original style. (beijingupdates.com)

I didn't know about the museum expansion. The glass cubes in the original plan could alter the look of this museum.

China's National Museum to reopen on April 1
14:16, February 16, 2011

After three and a half years, the 2.5-billion-yuan expansion of the National Museum of China is winding down, and the museum plans to reopen on the first day of April, according to the Beijing Morning Post.

The National Museum will join hands with three major German museums, including the Berlin National Museum, the Dresden National Art Collection Museum and the Bavarian State Picture Galleries, to hold its first exhibition after reopening. The theme of the exhibition is "Illuminative Arts." A large number of famous art works of Germany will come to China at that time, and the exhibition will last 12 months.

In addition, an exhibition about ancient Peru from the first century to the seventh century will be shown from April 28 to Oct. 28 at the America Room, and a total of 180 cultural relics, including potteries, textiles, metal objects and stones, will be there.

The museum nearly tripled in size from 65,000 square meters to almost 200,000 square meters, and the number of exhibition rooms increased to 49, including an Asia room, Africa room, Europe room and America rooms for international exhibitions.

Last February, the State Administration of Cultural Heritage transferred more than 390,000 cultural relics to the National Museum, bringing its total collection up to 1.05 million.

The current National Museum has already become one of the top museums in the world. It is not merely a public place for exhibition but also an important location that provides high-grade cultural enjoyment for the public. It will bring great spiritual pleasure for Chinese and global visitors.

Lv Zhang, the director of the National Museum, said the new National Museum could receive 8 million to 10 million visitors every year, about three times the amount it has seen in the past. Basic exhibitions in the museum will be free to the public, while some special exhibitions will charge a relatively small amount for a ticket due to preparation expenses.

3.1 new national museum opened

From an architectural point of view, the building has really very little interest. There is nothing Chinese in its composition. This building could be in Toronto or in Buenos Aeres or in Sydney... This is a global colourless, tasteless and drab construction, like the "global English language". I do not understand why Chinese communist authorities have decided to keep this ugly building instead of removing it. This was the opportunity to create something new, for instance by making an alliance of old and modern patterns. But in the end, as always, communists have very little ideas.

In my opinion, the buildings look like Tibetan architecture.
