A380 in Manchester - Thread 2

Quote:
New Airbus plane to stop at Manchester Airport

By James Chapelard

The Airbus A380, the world’s largest passenger aircraft, will land at Manchester Airport for the first time on Saturday as part of a series of flights around the North West.

The aircraft will perform a standard approach into Manchester Airport at 1.20pm above the runway before heading to Liverpool.

The aircraft is likely to draw crowds of people to the airport keen to catch a glimpse of the double decker plane.

Vantage points include the top levels of the Terminal 1 and Terminal 3 car parks as well as the Aviation Viewing Park, the airport said.

“The Airbus A380 has strong links with the North West as well as playing an important role in the future of the aviation industry,” said Andrew Cornish, the airport’s managing director.

great that its coming to manchester. i assume Emerates will be flying them to manchester in a few years? (they have 50 on order and will recive the 1st one at the end of the month)

Singapore Airlines has fitted a small shopping mall, a crazy golf course and 6 restaurants on their planes

The joystick are so there for the flight crew to play computer games during the less busy periods, the cockpit is equiped with satelite tv and full internet access - hence the keyboards. pilots like to check up on facebook whilst at 39 000 feet.

the a380 is as easy to fly as an airbus a320, a much smaller plane which only holds up to 170 passengers. the a380 can be flown safely with a full hydralics failure.

I'm going to go along.

Depending on which runway is used and from which direction it's going to land, the Robinsons pub at the end of the runway could be another good vantage point.

Is it actually landing? It wasn't clear in the Crains article.

the article is contradictory. Note the use of the words 'approach' and 'on to Liverpool'. Dont expect this plane to actually lands guys.

Emirates will almost definately fly A380 to MAN but it might be the fourth or fifth plane they recieve so not for a while.

Cheers.

future.architect I think it can hold quite afew more than 170 people and about the landing. It says in the Liverpool echo that's its landing and its says there its landing so I reckon its going to land. One thing I don't get is there are only two stories about it. If this was London it would be all over the news.

Biggest passenger plane heads for Liver Building

THE world’s largest passenger aircraft pays a special visit to Merseyside on Saturday.

As a special tribute to Liverpool’s status as Capital of Culture, the Airbus 380 is to fly by the Liver Building to give the city its first glimpse of the engineering marvel.

It will head over the water to New Brighton promenade for a display in front of thousands at the annual Wirral show.

Project pilot Peter Chandler and colleague Frank Chapman will preview a special exhibition of flying which will form the centrepiece of the Farnborough air show the following week.

Aviation fans are expected to flock to see the plane, which is conducting a series of flights around the north west.

Airbus said the fly-by is a special present for Merseyside employees who worked on the super-jumbo.

A spokesman said: “With many of its 7,000-strong workforce, plus suppliers and their friends and family being resident on the Wirral and in the Liverpool and Manchester areas, this tour will be something of a homecoming for the A380.

“In tribute to the city’s role as European Capital of Culture 2008, this prestigious European aircraft will follow Liverpool’s historic waterfront before heading to Wirral.”

The A380 seats 525 passengers in two, full-length, mid and upper passenger decks.

It is landing at Manchester airport at 1.20pm before heading to Liverpool.

Wirral show spokesman David Highet said: “It’s fantastic that the Airbus will be a guest of the Wirral show. It has strong links to the north west because the wings were built in Broughton.

“It’s a real coup for the show and the promenade will afford an excellent view of the plane – not that you could miss it.”

The performance is weather permitting and organisers hope it will be a highlight of the show – and a unique feature of the Capital of Culture celebrations.

Flown by Airbus pilots Peter Chandler and Frank Chapman, the A380 is taking up invitations to makes its public debut at some of the largest and most prestigious public events in the country, as well as making its first appearance at the North West's major airports.

Manchester Airport
- an approach and go-around at 1.20pm

Liverpool John Lennon Airport
- an approach and go-around at 1.25pm

A low level flight along the River Mersey (weather permitting), visible from the Liverpool and Birkenhead waterfronts - in recognition of Liverpool's status as 2008 European Capital of Culture (between 1.25pm and 1.30pm).

No landings

'An approach and go around'?

Sounds like one of my seduction techniques.

I heard that Sir Alan Sugar will be taking the controls and that it will be landing at Barton Aerodrome. Well, I say 'landing'...

Fook me thats huge! Never seen the appeal of piloting flying buses though.

Didnt know you could fly a plane with a laptop that has been snapped in half.

Landing at Barton Aerodrome?!! An A380 wouldnt even wipe its arse with it

I'd rather land at Barton than Liverpool Stan Boardman Airport.

All that technology and they have plastic on their seats! You'd think they'd have got Rolls Royce in to do the insides as well as the engines.

The last thing the A380 needs is more weight!

Right, I've got my anorak, camera and thermos flask.

Does anybody know which runway is being used for landings today and from which direction.

I can't decide on going to the Airport pub, the T1 car park, the Aviation Viewing Park.

Anyone any ideas?

Westerly winds today so will be 'landing' on 23R. If you want to see it close up on approach then the airport pub, if you want to see it close up on climb out then the viewing park. If you want an all round view then top of T1 car park.
