ABUBAKAR BALEWA UNIVERSITY, BAUCHI

The Abubakar Tafawa Balewa University, Bauchi was established in 1980 as the Federal University of Technology, Bauchi, Nigeria. At its inception the University inherited the site of the former Bauchi College of Arts and Sciences (BACAS) at Yelwa. A permanent site covering 4,500 hectares of land off Bauchi - Ningi road was later acquired for the institution where physical development has already commenced.

The institution's first set of students were admitted in October, 1981 for pre-degree and remedial programmes while the degree courses of the School of Science and Science Education began in October, 1982. October 1 st 1984, brought the merger of the University with the Ahmadu Bello University, Zaria with a subsequent change of its name to Abubakar Tafawa Balewa College, Ahmadu Bello University, Bauchi Campus.

The University regained its autonomous status in 1988 following a general de-merger of such institutions. This was followed by a subsequent change of its name to Abubakar Tafawa Balewa University, Bauchi. The new name was in honour of the late Sir Abubakar Tafawa Balewa, the first Prime Minister of Nigeria.

The University comprises six schools (faculties) with 23 programmes (departments) as well as a postgraduate school. It has a student population of over 10,000 and a staff strength of over 1,200. The incumbent Vice - Chancellor of the University is Professor G. A. Babaji.

The Federal University of Technology, Minna is a Federal Government owned University in Nigeria. It was established on 1st February, 1983. The objective for its establishment is to give effect to the Nation’s drive for the much-needed self-reliance in Science, Engineering and especially Technology. It is a specialized University of Technology.

The pioneer Vice-Chancellor was Professor J.O. Ndagi who served from 1983 to 1990. He was succeeded by Professor S.O. Adeyemi from 1990 and 1994. Between 1994 and 1997 Professor I.H. Umar served as Sole Administrator. Professor S.A. Garba was briefly acting Vice-Chancellor between 26 th June and 6th August, 1997. On 7th August, 1997 Prof. M.A. Daniyan became the third substantive Vice Chancellor of the University till 6th August, 2002. Prof. J.O. Adeniyi served from 7th August to 2nd October, 2002 as acting Vice Chancellor. The current Vice-Chancellor Prof. H. Tukur Sa’ad was appointed on 3rd October, 2002.The pioneer Registrar was late Dr. B.P. Sawa who served from 1983 to 1986. Dr Bawa Salka was acting Registrar between 1986 and 1988. Then Mrs. L.S.J. Ahmed became the Registrar of the University between 1988 and 1993. She was succeeded by Alhaji U.A. Sadiq who served as the Registrar from October, 1998 - 2003, having acted in that position since 1993. The current Acting Registrar Mallam M.D. Usman was appointed on 1st October, 2003.

At inception, the University acquired on a permanent basis, the facilities of the former Government Teachers' College Bosso which now serves as the Bosso Campus of the University. It has undergone a tremendous. face-lift and wears a beautiful outlook befitting a modern University. The University acquired 10,650 hectares of land at Gidan-Kwano along the Minna - Kataeregi - Bida Road as its permanent site, to carter for the necessary inevitable expansion envisaged. On Tuesday, June, 2nd 1992 the former President and Commander-in-Chief of the Armed Forces, Federal Republic of Nigeria, General Ibrahim Badamasi Babangida GCFR, fss, mni (rtd), performed the Sod Turning Ceremony to mark the commencement of projects on the main campus site. And since then work had started in earnest for the physical development of the Main Campus which in phase I consists of the School of Agriculture and Agricultural Technology (SAAT), School of Environmental Technology (SET), School of Engineering and Engineering Technology (SEET) Buildings, Students Hostels, Students Center, University Library, Senate Building, Staff houses, Computer Centre as well as the Industrial Development Centre.

The completion of students’ hostels, some staff houses, SET and SEET buildings
facilitated the commencement of full academic activities in the Main Campus at the beginning of the 2004/2005 academic session. Meanwhile, SAAT is temporarily occupying a part of the SEET Complex pending the completion of its building.Since its inception, the University has graduated students, whose market value is being adjudged very satisfactory and are in high demand both in government and industry, servicing the technological needs of the nation. The figure showed a remarkable growth rate from 22 graduates in 1990, to 662 in 1998 and total students enrolments are now over 13,000 with corresponding academic staff strength of 504.

The University has recorded quite a number of academic achievements which, include the design and fabrication of a number of highly valuable items of socio-economic importance such as the Solar air heater, Motor-car crankshaft, Gearing system for crane hoist drives, Rice de-stoning machine, Maize sheller, Multi-purpose grinder, Irrigation models, Poultry feeder amongst a host of other creative innovations. It is equally gratifying to note that the University has gained recognition nationwide as a Centre for Excellence in Computer Science having been so designated by the National Universities Commission. In pursuit of this, the University obtained Internet connectivity towards the end of 1998, acquired its VSAT facility in 2003, and by 2005/2006 academic session students’ registration was conducted on-line. Now the members of the University Community can easily access information the World over on the super highway. In pursuance of academic excellence in solving human problems, Professor S.A. Garba of the Department of Microbiology led a team of researchers in the development and production of typhoid fever vaccines. This project is sponsored by the Unipetrol Nigeria Plc. The team has been able to develop and produce typhoid fever vaccines. And having completed the testing on mice, guinea pigs, rabbits and monkeys, the Vaccine was tested on humans with amazing success. The new vaccine would soon b e made available to the global market after further due process. For the purpose of generating internal revenue to supplement government funds the University established the FUTMIN CONSULT, a consultancy outfit. The outfit has continued to make some positive impact to justify its establishment. In this regard, it has undertaken the following consultancy services among others: Gurara Inter Basin Water Transfer. NNDC/UNIDO Project. EEC/FGN Middle-Belt Project, Niger State Ecological Mapping for wheat growing, ADB/ONDO State Ecological Zone Mapping, Mando Fish Farm and TRANSCORP-HILTON Hotel Sewage Design, Environmental Impact assessment of Kagara Dam for the Upper Niger River Basin and Rural Development Authority (UNRBDA). FUTMIN CONSULT is also a consultant to INEC on its Computerization and Telecommunication Programme, and to UBE on its programmes in Niger and Kogi States. Other consultancy services recently carried out by the FUTMIN CONSULT include the Second National Fadama Development Project (Fadama II) in Niger State and the Niger State Agroclimatological zones and Land use mapping into crop zones.

In August 2003 the University Council formalized the Centre for Climate Change and Freshwater Resources (CCCFR) as one of three newly established Centres. The others are Centre for Human Settlements and Urban Development (CHSUD) and Centre for Remedial and Extra-mural Studies (CRES). The CCCFR in collaboration with environmentalists in the six Geopolitical Zones of Nigeria have just concluded a N105 million National Agro-Climatic Atlas Project to combat effects of climate change-induced natural disaster in Nigeria sponsored by the Ecological Fund Office of the Presidency. The second phase of the project is awaiting Federal Executive Council’s approval. Aart from this project, the Centre is now into collaborative climate change studies with University of Cape Town, South Africa, while its scientists continue as consulting experts with United Nations Agencies like UNFCCC, WMO, UNEP, UNDP, FAO, UNESCO etc. The Centre is also involved in the university’s Sustainable Livelihood initiative in the context of the UN Decade of Education for Sustainable Development (2005-2015) and is about to commence a new professional programme in Climate Change Disaster Risk Assessment and Risk Reduction as a prelude to a programme in Disaster Early Warning.

The Centre for Human Settlements and Urban Development (CHSUD) which was established by the University in collaboration with the UN-Habitat is to assist in settlements, Urban Governance and Urban Development. Since then, CHSUD has focused attention on building capacity at all levels of government, for effective Urban Environmental Management such as establishment of Environmental Management Information System, Certificate and Postgraduate Diploma Programmes in Public-Private Partnership for Urban Environment. With the support of the Collaborative Learning Course established by a partnership of UNDP and Yale University, U.S.A. CHSUD is currently carrying out consultancy service for UN-Habitat, in four Nigerian cities (Ibadan, Enugu, Kano and Karu) on the use of implementation instruments for sustainable cities programme. In its effort to contribute to the development of manpower for urban environmental management in Nigeria, CHSUD is in the process of designing post-graduate courses (M.Sc. and Ph.D) in City Planning and Urban Design, with the support of UN-Habitat.The Centre for Remedial and Extra-Mural Studies (CRES) is responsible for coordination of all academic programmes not funded by the National Universities Commission (NUC). Remedial course is a one-year terminal programme specifically designed to equip candidates from catchment areas with emphasis on Niger State, who are deficient in some basic science subjects and are unable to meet UME admission requirements. Admission into this programme is also extended to other thirty-six states of the federation and FCT. On successful completion of Remedial programme, students secure admission into the various degree programmes run by the University. Approval has also been given to the Centre to commence Diploma and Certificate programmes. More recently in August 2006, the Centre for Research and Development in Information Technology (CREDIT) was established. This latest Centre is not only to make Federal University of Technology, Minna, ICT compliant but also to launch the University into the global market of certified software development. In the area of domestic and foreign linkages and collaboration, the Management of the University recently created two new directorates to cater for this important function of networking. These are the Directorate of Affiliation and Local Linkages (ALL) and the Directorate of Collaboration and External Linkages (CEL).The University has established a linkage programme with the University of Namibia and the University of Scienec and Technology, Kumasi, Ghana. Nnamdi Azikiwe University came into being as an off-shoot of the defunct Anambra State University of Technology (ASUTECH). ASUTECH, established by the Anambra State University of Technology statute, operated as a multi-campus University, with Campuses in Abakaliki and Enugu –in what is now Enugu State– and Awka and Nnewi –in what is now Anambra State. Following the split of the former Anambra State into two States –Anambra and Enugu States– the Awka and Nnewi Campuses of the former Anambra State University of Technology, were by the Anambra State Edict No. 5 of November 26, 1991, constituted into Nnamdi Azikiwe University. The Edict upheld Awka and Nnewi as Campuses of the University. The University was taken over by the Federal Government with effect from July 15, 1992. The Rt. Dr. Nnamdi Azikiwe, the Owelle of Onitsha, after whom the University is named was in the vanguard of the fight against colonialism in Africa and was the doyen of the independence struggle in Nigeria. Believing in the use of education as a veritable tool in the liberation struggle and in the enthronement of the “dignity of man,” he founded the first autonomous Nigerian University. His choice of a name for that University – the University of Nigeria – is an eloquent testimony to his belief in and commitment to Nigerian unity. The Rt. Hon. Dr. Nnamdi Azikiwe was the first indigenous Governor-General of Nigeria and its first President. The University is proud to be named after this renowned statesman and will remain true to the ideals which inspired him.

MISSION STATEMENT

Nnamdi Azikiwe University is founded on the philosophy that knowledge should be propagated and disseminated to individuals without let or hindrance. Teaching and research would be anchored on the needs of the immediate environment and the Nigerian society generally. Rt. Hon. Dr. Nnamdi Azikiwe, after whom the University is named, stands out clearly in the history of university education in Nigeria and Africa in general. In the discharge of its mission, the University shall live up to the ideals of this renowned statesman, by making university education pragmatic, and using it to forge unity among the various communities in Nigeria. The mission of the University is, thus, to use teaching, research and public service to solve societal problems. In the process of learning, students would be oriented to use education in the solution of practical problems confronting them and the Nigerian society. It is hoped that the University's graduates will be able to use their knowledge to lift the society off its agricultural under-production, environmental degradation, and misapplication and/or under-utilization of human and material resources, cultural disorientation, etc.

To achieve these purposes and harness the large pool of qualified secondary school graduands and high calibre human power in the environment of the University, the University will be conventional in scope and outlook, covering wide areas of learning and research.

In totality, the mission of the University is to produce graduates who shall possess the following attributes:
a wide and ordered knowledge in a discipline area; the ability to reason logically; the ability to communicate clearly in speech and writing with confidence and fluency; numeracy and computer literacy; accepted moral values as honesty, humility, truthfulness, and high ethical standards in personal and professional life; acceptance of obligations and responsibilities; the desire for long-life education and creativity;

The Ajayi Crowther University (ACU), Oyo, is located on the Ibadan-Oyo-Ilorin road in Atiba Local Government Area (LGA) of Oyo State. The Campus can be reached within one hour by road from Ibadan and Ogbomosho, in about one-and-half hours from Ilorin and Ile-Ife and in about two hours from Lagos, all of which are University Towns. By virtue of its location, ACU has great opportunities for both Academic and Social interactions with many University Towns in its region.

Oyo, now a University Town, is cosmopolitan due to the traditional hospitality of the people and this diversity in population will rub off on the ACU campus like the erstwhile St. Andrews College which had students from all over the country and the former St. Andrews College of Education, a State College of Education, which had students from 14 of the 30 states of the federation in 1995.

The University has Two Campuses: The St. Andrews Campus and The Offa-Meta Campus. The old St. Andrews College campus is located on a gentle slope and has a land area of 37.02 hectares. By using the site of the old St. Andrews College which was established in Oyo in 1896, this campus of the University is now completely within the built-up area of Oyo Town.

This has afforded the University the opportunity of sharing municipal services and utilities with the town. It also makes the campus and the town easily accessible from each other. In addition to the St. Andrews College Campus, additional 109 hectares had been acquired about 2km from the St.

Andrews Campus on Oyo-Ogbomoso Road, thereby bringing the total land holding of the University to 146.02 Hectares.

The University encourages students who so desire to organize themselves into, and join associations that contribute to the academic and social life of the University.
The University also does not encourage or recognize any student association, which, in its membership, discriminates on account of race, sex or religion.

For this reason, tribal and other ethnic student organizations shall not be permitted by the University. And recognized associations are required to inform the Students Affairs officers of their existence and to submit the names of their officers to him for record purposes at the beginning of every session.

The University Library is an Information-Age learning center, Our focus is that, no matter where they may be, students and teachers can use technology to tap into the world's knowledge bank and explore exciting information about topics such as Science, Current Events, History, Languages, Arts and Communication, and share their The University Library Hours are determined by the Academics Calendar and the needs of the Staff and Students.

The nucleus of Bayero University came into being in January 1960 when Ahmadu Bello College was established and located at the School for Arabic Studies (close to the palace of the Emir of Kano). The then Principal of the School for Arabic Studies, late Dr. Aliyu Abubakar, was also in charge of the College Section, comprising Islamic History, Hausa, and English Literature. In October 1962, the first University to be established in Northern Nigeria, Ahmadu Bello University, was founded in Zaria. It was named after the late Sir Ahmadu Bello, Sardauna of Sokoto, who was Premier of Northern Nigeria from 1954 to 1966. This made a change of name for the Ahmadu Bello College in Kano necessary to avoid any confusion. Thus, in the same year, the Ahmadu Bello College was renamed Abdullahi Bayero College after the Emir of Kano, Abdullahi Bayero who ruled Kano from 1927 to1953. In the same year that the College was renamed, a new Principal, Alhaji, later, Professor S. A. S. Galandanci, was appointed to head both the School of Arabic Studies and the Abdullahi Bayero College section.

In January 1964, the College moved to a temporary site at the old Kano Airport Hotel with its first set of ten students admitted for a B. A. degree programme of Ahmadu Bello University. They started their lectures on 1st February 1964. The College also got its first Provost at this time in the person of Professor Abdalla El-Tayib, a Sudanese. Abdullahi Bayero College (ABC/ABU) graduated its first set of students in July 1966. There were ten of them, and they convocated in November 1966. From 1966 to 1980 this institution, which was a Faculty of Ahmadu Bello University, Zaria presented graduating students to Ahmadu Bello University.

With the departure of Professor El-Tayib in 1966, Alhaji Hamidu Alkali was appointed as the second Provost and he assumed duty in September 1966. Alhaji Hamidu Alkali was appointed Provost and Dean, Faculty of Arts and Islamic Studies established in 1964 and he remained in office until November 1969. His years at ABC/ABU coincided with the Nigerian civil war years. However, it was also a period for the development of the first phase of ABC’s permanent site (now called Old Campus).

At the time of Alhaji Hamidu Alkali’s arrival, the Library complex, which up to 1999 was the main Library of the University, was at the foundation level. He supervised the building of the Library and those of the other buildings such as the first kitchen (Kitchen I), the first female hostel, accommodating forty students (now occupied by a branch of the Afri Bank), and a generator house. The funds for these came from the British Colonial Government grant for Higher Education in Nigeria when Nigeria was being prepared for independence.

When the civil war started in July 1967, the ABC temporary site at the old Kano Airport Hotel (at the time it was the main Kano Airport) became a military target for the Biafran Airforce because of the location of some Russian-made MIG Fighters of the Federal Airforce in the vicinity of the old Airport. A home-made bomb was dropped around the area towards the end of 1967. The college was however not affected. By the first quarter of 1968 the civil war intensified and there were in Kano many wounded Federal soldiers from the war fronts. At a very short notice, the ABC, ABU Zaria was ordered by the military authorities to move out of the old Airport Hotel to give room for the facilities to be turned into a military hospital. Therefore, Abdullahi Bayero College moved to its permanent site in March 1968, and the British High Commissioner in Nigeria, Sir David Hunt, commissioned the Library complex on 26th April 1969. The permanent site is located at the western outskirts of the Kano city walls in the vicinity of Kabuga and Dukawuya gates on the Kano-Gwarzo Road.
It was also during this phase in the development of Abdullahi Bayero College that a maintenance unit of the ABU Estate Department was established. It was to look after the new buildings and the senior staff houses, AB1 to AB20 that had been constructed between 1959 and 1961 by the Northern Nigerian Government as part of the extension of Kano Nassarawa Government reservation Area. The fencing of the College land area of about 600 acres was also started. Alhaji Hamidu Alkali was transferred to ABU Zaria in November 1969 as Director, Institute of Education. Dr S. A. S. Galadanchi (now Professor) who held the post until he was appointed as the Vice-Chancellor of the University of Sokoto in 1975 succeeded him. Abdullahi Bayero College entered its second phase of development during the tenure of Professor S. A. S. Galadanchi. The buildings for the Faculties of Arts and Islamic studies and Education were built during his tenure. Likewise, the first male students’ hostel, together with a larger female students’ hostel, were constructed. The Kano State Government, under the late Governor Audu Bako, contributed a lot towards the physical development of the College, especially in the area of hostel accommodation. In 1975, Abdullahi Bayero College was raised to the status of a University College with the right to award degrees on behalf of Ahmadu Bello University. The institution adopted the new name of Bayero University College and its first Principal was Dr. Mahmud Tukur, who formally took over in September 1975. The University College also got a separate Governing Council headed by Professor S. O. Biobaku. In 1977, the Federal Government of Nigeria made all the University Colleges in the country full-fledged universities. Thus Bayero University College dropped “Abdullahi” and “College” and became simply Bayero University. The Principal of the College, Dr. Mahmud Tukur, became the first Vice Chancellor of Bayero University. Dr. Tukur together with a dedicated team shouldered the responsibility of establishing the foundation of a University. The philosophy, orientation, and mission of the University were clearly spelt out.

Adekunle Ajasin University , former Ondo State University , Ado-Ekiti, Ekiti State , is named after Chief Michael Adekunle Ajasin, the Governor that signed the law establishing it in 1982. it is a State University owned by Ondo State , located in south-western Nigeria , West Africa . The University is this year(2005) actually only five years old at its present new site at Akungba-Akoko, a small rural community nestling among the rolling hills and spectacular granite outcrops that characterize the northern part of the State.

Located some 350 kilometers to the north-east of Lagos , Nigeria 's commercial capital, the town is easily reached by road from all parts of the country. It is also only an hour by road from Akure, the State Capital, which is served by an airport that provides air link by charter flights to other cities in the country.

The University's new site on the lower slopes of one of the many hills in that area previously belonged to a secondary school. As might therefore be expected, it was necessary to urgently re-plan it an also upgrade and augment the facilities on the ground there to enable regular instructional and ancillary activities to commence. The result of that re-planning effort, which took full advantage of the topography of the site, is today a fascinating cascade of red and grey-roofed buildings.

VISION:
To be a foremost Institution that move manpower development in the direction of self-apprenticeship; a first-class University in research, knowledge, character and service to humanity

MISSION:
To provide knowledge and skills for self-reliance in a conducive environment where teaching, learning and reserach can take place.

The proprietor of the Bells University of Technology is the Bells Educational Foundation. It has always desired to make input into university education delivery in Nigeria, having successfully established and run Bells Secondary Schools in Ota for some years. It is the dream of Bells Educational Foundation to establish a unique university where the good foundation given to the products of its secondary school and other secondary schools could be built upon. The opportunity was made available by the Federal Government, when Act No. 9 of 1993 was promulgated, allowing private individuals or organizations to establish universities in Nigeria, provided they meet certain criteria laid down by the Federal Government.

In order to realize its dream, the Bells Educational Foundation, the Proprietor of the university, has acquired a large expanse of land (more than 300 hectares) in Badagry, Lagos State, for the physical development of the University.

The Proprietor of the Bells University of Technology set up a planning committee, made up of former vice-chancellors of top Nigerian universities, top academic staff and other seasoned university planners and professionals. The planning committee received briefing from the proprietor on the type of university envisaged and thereafter brought their expertise to bear on the planning process.

To ensure uniqueness, the University would offer courses that would:
support relevant and sustainable technology that is transferable and applicable especially in the area of biotechnology;
be ICT-driven and at the cutting edge of Science and Technology; and
include studies that produce a balanced education.

TAI SOLARIN UNIVERSITY OF EDUCATION, IJAGUN

image hosted on flickr

The Tai Solarin University of Education (TASUED) was established in 1978 by the Ogun State government as the Ogun State College of Education later named Tai Solarin College of Education (TASCE). By the proclamation of the Governor of Ogun state on the 29th January 2005, the erstwhile Tai Solarin College of Education (TASCE) was transformed and upgraded to a University of Education. The college was founded to produce middle level manpower for schools and colleges in Ogun state in particular, and Nigeria in general. The law establishing the college was promulgated in 1980.

The development of the then College, both physical and academic was steady but gradual. It graduated the first set of N. C. E. teachers in 1980 at her temporary site on Igbeba Road, Ijebu-Ode. It moved to the permanent site, on Benin Express road in 1990, where TASUED is presently located. The addition of more structures since January 2005, no doubt, prepares the institution physical development wise for the new TASUED. The University is steadily wearing the look of an institution of higher learning.

The College, TASCE as popularly known, started with an initial students population of 187 in four Schools viz: - Education, Arts, Natural Science and Applied Science, with staff strength of 18 both teaching and non-teaching. The student population has grown to 12,544 both N.C.E and Degree (full time and part-time) as at the end of 2002/2003 session. The staff strength has reached 543, of which 232 are academic staff. As at the end of 2001/2002 session, the College has produced about 69,250 graduates predominantly N.C.E teachers. Two sets of Bachelor of Education graduates have so far been produced under the supervision of the University of Ibadan. One of the graduands had 1st class honours degree.
The erstwhile College had eight Schools viz: School of Education, Arts and Social Sciences, Languages, Vocational and Technical education, Sciences, Graduate Studies, Preliminary Studies and Part Time Studies. The academic structure of TASUED is presently made up of the following colleges and institutes.
Colleges
· College of Applied Education and Vocational Technology
· College of Humanities
· College of Science and Information Technology
· College of Social and Management Sciences
· College of Education
Institutes and centers
v Center for Vocational Skills, Entrepreneurship and General studies
v Center For Human Rights and Gender Education
v Center for Part-time and External Programmes
v Pre-degree and Foundation Science Unit
v Center for Information and Communication Technology

The then College was affiliated to the University of Ibadan for the B.Ed programme while shortly before the proclamation as a University of Education the college worked out an affiliation arrangement with Adekunle Ajasin University, Akungba – Akoko, to run a programme leading to the award of B.Sc./B.Tech., including post Graduate Diploma in Education. All the efforts were geared towards producing educators that would be competent both in content and in pedagogy, thus making them respond adequately to the demands of teaching in the 21st Century.
Assessments
TASCE, has had three accreditation visitations by the N. C. C. E., the last one was in 2002. All the courses available in the 28 Departments of the College were fully accredited. The assessment visitations conducted by the University of Ibadan and, recently, by Adekunle Ajasin University showed that the erstwhile College had both human and material resources comparable to what are available in the Education Faculties of some new Universities in Nigeria. It is not therefore surprising, that the College was transformed to a University of Education.
TASCE that TASUED absorbed was rated first among 52 State and privately owned Colleges of Education and fourth among 74 Colleges of Education in Nigeria by the N. C. C. E. assessment. The College was awarded a trophy recently for being the most peaceful tertiary institution among all the tertiary institutions in Ogun State. By the Ogun State Law of 2002, the College was given a degree-awarding status, which it can run solely, or in affiliation to some reputable institutions of higher learning in Nigeria, as may be approved by Council.

BRIEF HISTORY

The University of Jos started as a Campus of the University of Ibadan in November, 1971, with the appointment of Professor E. A. Ayandele as its first Acting Principlal. Its first home was the present Township campus of the University which is located along Murtala Mohammed way, Jos. Its first students admitted in January, 1972 were pre-degree students. Degree courses in Arts were introduced in october 1973 and in Science and Education the following year. The same year, the Bauchi Road Campus which then accommodated only the Faculties of Natural, environmental, Medical Sciences and Education was acquired. In October 1975, the then Military Government announced the establishment of seven new Universities and University Colleges including the University of Jos. Professor Gilbert Onuaguluchi was appointed its first Vice- Chancellor. Since then, the University has made enormous progress. By 1993, a new system for appointment of Vice-Chancellor in Nigerian Universities was introduced. There was therefore a delay in the appointment of a new Vice-Chancellor in 1993. In the interim, Prof. G. O. M. Tasie acted as Vice-Chancellor from October 1993 to March 1994.

Eventually, Prof. N.E. Gomwalk was appointed Vice-Chancellor of the University in April,1994. His tenure ended in 1999. Professor M. Y. Mangvwat was appointed Ag. Vice-Chancellor from January 2000 to May 4th 2001. He was later appointed substantive Vice-Chancellor with effect from 5th May 2001. The current Vice- Chancellor, Professor Sonni Tyoden was appointed June 12, 2006 as the 7th substantive Vice- Chancellor of the university.
Gomwalk was a terrible Vice Chancellor.

My father was a lecturer in the University until 1996. The facilities that they provided lecturers was fantastic.

Fantastic housing, fantastic incentives. Great surrounding leisure facilities. I was born near the university and lived in the University Campus, and I also schooled in the University School for the first few years of my life and it was the best part of my life.

A fantastic University!!

MODIBBO ESTABLISHES ABUJA CITY UNIVERSITY

In order to foster continuing education and encourage capacity building amongst working class residents of the Federal Capital Territory, the FCT Administration has concluded plans to establish a City University in Abuja, first of its kind in Africa.

The FCT Minister, Dr. Aliyu Modibbo Umar who made this disclosure today in Abuja said that this was part of the decisions taken at the last FCT Executive Committee meeting.

Dr. Umar stated that the FCT Administration will soon set up a Committee to deal with its preliminary work including feasibility studies on the project to ensure that the dream is realized within a short time.

The Minister also said that the proposed City University will only offer courses in management sciences to take care of the needs of the workers that would like to further their education without going out of their working environment.

His words, “the FCT Administration is already working on the blue print of the proposed University to give it a semblance of what is obtainable in other world class cities like London and New York.”

Dr. Umar revealed that the FCT Administration has put machinery in motion to raise over N2 billion from the Organized Private Sector to fund the University’s take-off and its eventual development.

He further revealed that as the name depicts, the University will not have residential accommodation or hostels; stating that the only structures that will be built are the lecture theatres and administrative blocks; adding that the students will study and go back to their residential houses at the end of the day”,

The Minister remarked that a suitable site of about three to five hectares of land will be earmarked for the University in the Abuja metropolis.

“We will tour the world to recruit the best hands to take charge of the planned University; having in mind that we are preparing to be one of the greatest twenty cities of the world by the year 2020,” he stressed.

The Minister assured that the Abuja City University when completed will boast of the best teaching aids and staff in the world since the best brains will be put to task.

He insisted that capacity building is now synonymous development especially that the world economy is today knowledge-based.

The Minister said that the importance of education can not be over-emphasized since no nation can afford to toy with its educational sub-sector being the bedrock of any meaningful development.
