Albuquerque Balloon Fiesta

Over 800 balloonists gather from around the world every year in early October to fly in the Albuquerque sky. Usually attracts around 1,000,000 spectators.

Such a beautiful southwestern city. Probably the best outside of Las Vegas and Santa Fe. Beats Phoenix by a mile. And it gives us the future president of the USA-Martin Heinrich. What more could you ask for?

Is the river used at all? I don't know much about ABQ. From google earth it looks like the closest part to downtown ABQ looks hard to access and also looks seasonal. Kinda like the Arkansas river in Tulsa which is dry most of the year due to the dam upstream controlling the water.

The Rio Grande is very shallow and flows are unstable especially in the fall and winter months. Irrigation saps it of most of its water and the ecosystem is very stressed. Attempts to create navigable waters in the 19th century quickly failed.

No talks of low water dams or would that further the stress on the ecosystem?

There are numerous low water dams that were built to move water to irrigation canals alongside the river. The Corps of Engineers also built levees along much of the river to reduce flooding and that has harmed the ecosystem more than anything. Some of that is being reversed in a couple small areas but overall, water is too lacking for any major development of the Rio.
